Te has killed me once again:

Other People's Problems by [livejournal.com profile] thete1

Looking for Batman. Right. "Is there some kind of emergency Justice League thing that I'll be reading about tomorrow?" There. That didn't sound *too* bitter.

"What? Oh, no. I'm just..." Vague hand gesture, too fast to actually make out. "You know. Visiting."

Tim looks at him.

"Wow, can you do that with both eyebrows?"

Tim demonstrates, mostly on purpose. Mostly.

I warn you ahead of time that is going to be pretty near empty unless you have some awareness of the Batman mythos and where Te's coming from regarding Justice League, Flash as a character, and Batman's family/issues/relationships.

This *isn't* a fic where you can go in blind, it's a fic for a specific target audience, assumes that the reader is aware of certain things, and *dives* right in. And it *gut-punches* you in not only the subtle and not-so-subtle angst, but also in the *humor* and the characterizations and the situations.

It's a cat's cradle of a story, and the whole is this awesome fragile web and it throws what you know into murky relief and three-dimensional shadow...

[]

And [livejournal.com profile] copperbadge answers a challenge and beautifully too...stories of pirates told by the best storyteller of 'em all, Captain Jack Sparrow...

[]

Speaking of which:

LotR Character Deathmatches

Aragorn vs. Jack Sparrow
Who is the mangiest of them all???

glee!!

ok, this is a new thing to rec, buuuuut:

[livejournal.com profile] slyzucchinio's profile is wonderful and hilarious and feral *goldfish*.

I am a dynamic figure, often seen scaling walls and purchasing large quantities of concrete. I have been known to remodel Super Wal*Marts during my lunch hour, making them more efficient in the area of heat retention. I translate ethnic slurs for Cuban refugees; I write award-winning operas; I manage time efficiently.

Occasionally, I tread water for four days in a row. I can control men with my intriguing and all the same godlike kazoo playing. I can pilot tricycles up severe inclines with unflagging speed, and I cook Thirty-Minute Brownies in less than twenty minutes.

okay, I've been going over the various RotK reviews and I see that I'll have to make posts later of wonderful hilarious snarkings and thoughtful discussion...

y'know everyone keeps on going on about the signal fires. I'm wondering if I would've had that reaction too had my mom not been repeatedly laughing next to me.

What affected me more though was the first view of Minas Tirth. That just blew me away...

but wow reading this and I could understand, about the signal fires, and it makes sense now...

remind me to never watch movies (that I hadn't seen before) with my mother again.

But, seriously tho? I feel that I can't fully blame her for laughing inappropriately, because this isn't her culture and it's hard for her to follow along with the language.

Which is interesting in itself how there's VISUAL themes within a culture that can't carry over; or at least, not without a good grasp of dialogue as well.

This would apply to musical themes/cliches as well. I've noticed how much the fluting pipes always makes me tear up when paired up with battleground scenes. I wonder how much of that is because of these vague Gettysburg movies I remember watching in highschool or middleschool

[]

a note on the het pairings:

On the Aragorn/Arwen thing versus the Aragorn/Eowyn, I'm leaning more towards the Aragorn/Arwen. ::ducks and hides::

Yeah, I know Eowyn kicks ass and I love her something grand, and Eowyn's able to keep up and hold her own in a battle far more than Arwen probably can, but it seems like Eowyn looks at Aragorn as The Hope of the People...and going back to my Aragorn-as-Harry-Potter argument, it makes sense to me that Aragorn doesn't want to be constantly looked up to and depended upon.

Meanwhile Arwen's known him and loved him as the Ranger, as that dirty greasy kid who stalks hobbits. And I think Aragorn needs that; as King and Ass-Kicker Extraordinaire, everyone's looking up to him and placing all this burden on his shoulders, and I think that it's probably better for him emotionally and mentally, in terms of a 'best match', that he's paired up with Arwen...He was reluctant about the crown anyways and I'd think he'd want someone around who couldn't care *less* about that silly trinket on his head...

[]

last note before I putter off to read more reviews:

I think the LotR movie trilogy is the BEST argument, and hey, even physical *proof*, there is to why dvds and computer rips will NEVER replace the big-screen. It won't work, not for movies that operate on this gorgeous grand scale.

Unfortunately that means that we're in for a streak of gratuitous action flick, unless you count the Sequel Splurg of 2003 as that...

However, if the industry people understood what's happened to the box office this past year at ALL (Nemo, PotC, RotK), they'd understand the value of plot and good acting to a good action flick.

And that? Would make my heart unspeakably happy.

NEED. To do that challenge.

Also, concur about Minas Tirith and A/A, though I'm not an A/A shipper. Doesn't change the fact that I Really Don't Like Arwen.

I kind of feel like Eowyn and Aragorn would be wasted on each other.

Like... Eowyn's this woman who'll ride into battle against everyone's wishes and all, she doesn't need to be married to a hero king, it'd render her being *her* superfluous, and I don't think Aragorn appreciates that part of her. And Aragorn's one of those people who doesn't want to fail at anything, *ever* - frankly, he *needs* to be married to a woman with Elven patience :P If Aragorn and Eowyn got married, they'd be at each other's throats within a month. She's better off with Faramir and his inferiority complex.

Love the fic/art recs, BTW... thanks ^.^ Since friending you, I don't have to sit around muttering about not having any fic to read that I *know* will be good.

GAWD! [livejournal.com profile] copperbadge is just too damnedly (yes. damnedly.) clever for his own good. I read all of his "challege responses" on Jaida's journal, and I was just fuming with (happiness) and jealousy. He's too good, that's the problem.

P.S. I can't take full credit for my profile. *hangs head* There's a link to the original at the bottom of the page -- my friends and I started playing around with the real essay as a lark waaaaaay back in middle school. We each re-wrote it for our own personalities, and mine just stuck around. Eh. Whatcanyado?

The signal fires had me in tears; about the only bit that did because the cinema was packed with idiots. Why? Because I've seen it happen. Charles and Diana's wedding in England they did that; we were at Mow Cop when the beacon was lit. Not sure now how far across England that went or if it was simultaneous rather than series but despite being a curmudgeon when it comes to royalty, the symbolism of it; the first Elizabeth, Armada, that kind of thing...just had me choked up.

That was a beautiful post you linked to; thanks ::hugs::

Snape art... guh. I just love that he's all sleep rumpled.

I'm for Arwen/Aragorn, too. Their love runs deep, Eowyn's just came across as far more shallow.

It all reminds me of a comment--Gore Verbinski?--that on how the grand old Hollywood epic is having a revival. They had to stop making them because it got too expensive, but now, comp tech has made it possible to once again stage huge epics on a relatively manageable budget.

Just means twice the goodness. You've seen 'From Dusk Till Dawn', right? 'cause dammit but just rewatched it, and my series just sprouted bloodsucking ground squirrels.

For your inspiration, a little excerpt from what I'm writing right now:

//Really wish there was another way to shut the gringo up//, Lorenzo snarked, shooting an exasperated last look at the face-sucking. Not that Seth was paying much attention to the departing pair; prison branded a variety of lessons on a man, and none of them could be erased with any ease, if at all. Moreover, having to deal with Richie’s little messed-up mind, and then with vampiric strippers, had done a number on Seth’s libido. When it came to women, anyway.

El definitely wasn’t a woman. And Sands, as obviously cracked as a sidewalk, wasn’t anything like soft in the way he was giving it up to the mariachi’s savaging mouth.

Oh, no, you must see. Nasty dirty George Clooney, and hell, I always go for the sweaty mud-caked ones, don't I?

And the squirrels--exactly. Thank God they attacked on a Friday.
Saturday, January 10th, 2004 05:47 am (UTC)
well, since I read the book, I can't really tell if the trailer is spoiler-ish or not, it doesn't seem so to me, although if you look at it too deeply, you might spoil yourself.

He's so very pretty in it though. You could just turn off the sound and not listen to the narration. But then you would've missed the chance to hear his lovely voice.

*hugs you randomly*

I've been looking for Lanna's summary for days - I forgot to save it and then forgot who wrote it ^^; Thanks for the link!

*is hugged* ^_^
no prob- enjoy! ^_~
Saturday, January 10th, 2004 06:52 am (UTC)
*nods* I agree with you on the Eowyn thing. And it goes the other way around: the Queen of Gondor will have to be all courtly and official. To which Arwen will take like a duck to water, and Eowyn would suffocate.

And well, I know I sound like a broken record, but Eowyn and Faramir's romance is one thing that should make it into the DVD - which makes me v. happy :) Now those two are good for each other - with Eowyn taking part of the load of actually doing things, Faramir can have more time for his studies and for making sure Ithilien does well economy-wise :)

LOL!! I have a newspaper clipping from several years ago reporting a young man's answer to the "tell us a bit about yourself" bit on his college application... and it's this, almost exactly. Weird.

It is a fabulous piece!
