I think the narrative and visual language used in your vid takes some getting used to, but the end effect of it is really interesting. I kinda feel at point that it might be cut either faster or slower at points because it seemed halfway. You mention that the music and style of the source were new for you...I don't suppose this was a transition period in your vidding as well? I could see maybe about 2 or 3 styles of editing (and editing speed) that you used for this vid and I wasn't sure if they were entirely intentional or not.
But back to that first comment on the new narrative/visual language; I think that might be why people may have difficulties grasping it. I'm not entirely sure how you might choose to lead into it if you're redoing this in the future, but a method I notice myself using is to start out with a measure or so of regular cutting and then start adding in more and more derivations on the cutting. For instance in "In The Breakdown" I started out with a few clips 'invisibly' cut to the beat for 4 counts; then I started varying it so that the cuts felt 'harder' and that the clips fell in a off-putting and un-balanced way to match the unsettledness/angst/anger of that initial section of the vid.
In any case, I think it's an interesting experiment worth trying again if you're so inclined and would look forward to seeing it. =)
