*nodding emphatically* That's why I said that there are multiple aesthetics, not just two. And the deeper you go into your definitions ("shiny", for example) the more aesthetic possibilities you uncover.

I know what you mean about clear, strong images and colors. I can get very overwhelmed by the super-fast, super-complex visual styles I see in some vids, where there are too many things for me to focus on, or a lot of elements distracting me away from the central image or theme -- if there even *is* only one central image or theme! I can appreciate those vids, but they aren't my favorites.

And yes, it's very much related to visual design, and I have the same preferences you have. I can see some kinds of more complicated or detailed designs, or vids, and think "Wow, that's really amazing, I wish my brain worked that way." But since it doesn't, I stick happily with my simpler designs.

That said, I am constantly amazed by how I can respond differently to a vid when it's 320x240 on my computer, with nasty codec-ized colors, than I do when it's on my TV and fully saturated.

Oh my god, yes. I download vids much less frequently than I used to, because I started to realize that vids that I thought I disliked, I actually *loved* when I saw them on a TV or con screen. So I fear not giving online vids a fair shake, you know?
