::wry grin:: So like, I was trying to write my final and this crashed upside the head. Funny how that works.

Un-beta'ed for lack of time/energy, 'cause it's either post or I'll obsess over it, am welcoming critique.

Fandom: Naruto
Pairing: Naruto/Sasuke
Rating: Mostly worksafe
Summary: Falling in love is like this.

Title: Like a Knife Loves Skin

[to just be graduated - selective hearing]

Naruto woke up to sunlight, looked around, and snapped the glass bits off his bedspread with a quick shake. They fell with a happy, sharp twinkle. Yawned, and put on his shoes. Yelped, shook out the glass and put them on again; wandered a bit, scratching, and made cereal. Kicked the stone away from under his table as he sat at it, and he sniffed at the milk.

Fresh this time, he thinks, maybe. He smiles at the bright day, and eats.

Later, he is all dressed and walking down the street grinning at the world. Konoha's citizens' are a muffled buzzing, like a hateful bee sorta, shoved to the edge of his hearing. Naruto wonders what missions they're taking today, hopefully something good and he lifts his head up a little higher.

Their meeting place was up ahead, Sasuke leaning on a rail, Sakura already sitting on the bridge, her face shining up at Sasuke and mouth moving. Naruto turns up his hearing a little to catch what she is saying. Something about her parents.

Naruto watches her and listens to the clear twinkle of her voice. She's pretty. He knows that this is a girl who knows love. She bursts with it, and he wants some of it too.

Sasuke greets him with an insult, but Naruto barely hears it and returns with a greeting just as friendly, his voice in Naruto's ears sounds like a similar hollow undertone.

[recognizably genin - see you blind]

Sasuke never quite knows what to make of the Naruto that he sensed. Weak control, he figures, because the dobe flickers sometimes.

Like sometimes the red and the blue fought so hard that gold emerged. The look of Naruto's chakra tasted like metal; like blood, and a bit of ash, and cool, crisp sky. Unmistakable.

So he knows when it's Naruto, and not a shuriken, that's thrown into his hands and only schools his face into something probably appropriate when he throws him at Zabuza.

[to not be chunin - fingerprints]

Somewhere, deep down, Sasuke knew that he still loved his brother. He knew that on some level Itachi still loved him, too. He knew that his family (all of his family) are disappointed in him (still), and he loves them with a sharp ache. He knew that they loved him back (and loves him, still) like a knife loves skin.

Sasuke felt a tremor up his arm as the Chidori rams into Naruto's chest.

[to fight a sannin - breathe against my shoulder]

It's gross the way 'snake'-smell seems to clog up his nose everywhere in Orochimaru's place.

The blood makes slippery puddles everywhere and Naruto slides across them like he does on the Tsunade's waxed floors. Heh, and the Old Hag said that that 'training' would never come in handy. Sasuke flopped his hand in that snobbish way of his towards the vague direction of the exits, the turd, but Naruto makes sure that Sasuke doesn't fall off his back as he kicks a couple support pillars. They cracked and he hears the place crashing down behind them as they left the place.

The air outside is like a slap to the face and Naruto manages several miles before he stops where the river gouged a twist in the land. The overhanging stones made good cover, if a bit wet. Naruto foraged and came back to find Sasuke groggily picking at a gash on his leg with one of the kunai. It smelled all ick, sour and putrid. The venom, maybe.

"Ugh! I am going to throw you into the river." Naruto flailed his arms and pinched his nose and did just that. When he fished Sasuke out of the river he looked like a drowned rat, and Naruto told him so. Grinned when Sasuke swore and lunged at him.

Naruto caught him and pinned him down, before grabbing the kunai still stubbornly clenched in that bastard's hands and started cutting off the rotting bits around Sasuke's wounds.

They'll be home soon.

[finally anbu - always on my tongue]

The blade came at him, and Sasuke could only blink, the missing-nin plunging the kunai straight into his throat to snap against his spinal cord. The rogue ninja twisted the knife viciously, with a 'pop', to make sure that the bones separated. There was a look of surprise on the Uchiha's face, as he staggered against a tree, as the missing-nin left to take care of the others. Sasuke looked down.

The snapping sound had not come from his spinal cord, he knew that. Nor did the popping sound.

The kunai had blunted, as it met his skin.

The kunai had melted against him.

The kunai felt--like gold. Like Naruto. So did the 'wound' that formed around it, so did the 'blood'-that-was-Naruto that licked wet lines down his throat and around his collarbone, Sasuke was aware that more of the missing-nin were passing by him, he was aware that this would make a good setup later to ambush their targets from behind once they all flowed by, but he was more aware of the warm warm lines that Naruto made as he slid down against Sasuke, pressing against Sasuke's shirt and Sasuke's skin teasing a circle around his bellybutton before dipping in, before dripping down into--god.

(trust Naruto to use henge and grope him on a mission)

Sasuke slipped down against the tree, twisting onto his back, and almost arched, almost moaned, but the 'wound' and the 'blood' around his throat tightened like a grip and the-blood-that-was-Naruto grew heavier, and the lick of him that drew swirls around his ear whispered at him, "Shut up, bastard." Made his point by tightening his liquid grip, elsewhere, which only made Sasuke (and he wasn't sure if to swear or to hiss) open his mouth but just as quickly Naruto surged into it and.

It felt like a kiss, damn him, Sasuke thought, even as he gagged a bit, even as he licked Naruto back, which caused the interesting effect of all of Naruto plastered against him shuddering and he would have gone on to try this more, if his internal clock didn't twinge at him and his training kicked in. So apparently did Naruto's, as the weight rapidly increased on him and he didn't get a chance to savor it, nor to kick himself for wanting to savor it, before the dobe was levering him up and he allowed himself to smack Naruto upside the head just once ("Oi!" "Idiot.") before they both turned to begin the ambush that'll finish the job.

"I am going to kick your ass when we get back," Sasuke felt the corner of his grimace twitching upward.

"I'd like to see you try," Naruto promised.

Author's Note: ::cackles:: umm, heh, yeah. I mean, Naruto can change into weapons and miscellany so why *not* blood, eh? Eh?? ;D

The continuity/setting/frame of reference for this piece is a little hard to pin down (although that feels deliberate?). That said, the imagery is fantastic. I'm not really a fan of Sasuke/Naruto, but your characterization of them both was so excellent - the little details of glass taken for granted, chakra scrutinized, and the ever present spirit of competition all worked so very well. There's something of a poetic quality to this piece that demands re-reading. Fascinating.

Have I ever commented you before? (not that it matters..? Have read all your saiyuki fics, and liked them lots, anyway. I lose at commenting). This story is just...very well written, of course, and the idea is so original. I don't think I've seen it before. Brilliant. (and it's well written naruto/sasuke with a happy ending, such a find...yay!)
