'cause me? TOTAL beat whore. TOTALLY. Like, what she said. There's just something awesomely satisfying about something that's wonderfully on beat (::throws kisses at [livejournal.com profile] rosesmove's new vid::) that just makes me sit up and pay attention and go "HELL YEAH!"

Part of this is because I don't really *hear* lyrics 100% of the time. I hear the vocals and the human voice is another instrument in the blend, adding it's own beat and it's own rhythm to the blend that is the song as a whole.

I wonder a bit if this is what being color-blind is like. Except instead of being limited in a specific range of color, words have limited meaning for me in a song.

Being a drummer (and an insane fan of drummers in general), you can imagine where my feelings on this matter lie :-)

I can appreciate great lyricists, but what usually catches me first is the rhythm. A beat that propells you to move, or at least sway or otherwise feel the beat.

I don't vid any longer but when I did, I think it's safe to say I was generally much more interested in matching the mood and rhythm of the song & the vid source than over-analyzing the lyrical significance of every word and finding the right visual/textual moment for it. Which, I think, is why my most successful & well-liked vids were very upbeat and action-packed--they were driven by the beat and timed as close as I could to the beat, even if they were more "eye-candy" than deeply meaningful. I always felt like I was grasping when I'd try to do a "deeper" vid that was more focused on the lyrics than the beat. But then maybe that's just me...

I think I actually have a tendency to do both. I mean, in a song, the lyrics usually fit the mood, so chances are if it fits the lyrics perfectly, it also fits the mood perfectly.

Thing is, even when I'm going for the deeply metaphorical, I still make sure all my timing is tight. Usually if a lyric is really important, it's on or right after a stronger beat in the song, because song artists want their lyrics to fit their song mood just like vidders want their clips to fit the song mood.
