Nooo!!!! I want to see the Trigun art and I get 'not found' *sob*
Monday, March 21st, 2005 10:11 pm (UTC)
That's a really nice Vash (manga!Vash! *drool*) Wolfwood's not quite right in a way I can't actually articulate, but I'm happy with just that Vash :-)
Monday, March 21st, 2005 11:05 pm (UTC)
Jumping in, cos uhm. *raises hand* Am to blame. XD

Yeah, I really wasn't happy with the Wolfwood either. AMEN. Mostly cos I had never drawn him before, and this was before I got my bloody Trigun books so I was working off really fuzzy memory anyhow... X_x But excuses aside, it's really a lack of skill over anything. Heh. ^^;

I'm glad you like the Vash, though! I think that was my second attempt... first being uhhhhhhhh back in '99. <3

you can see the old on in the same 'fanart' gallery on my main art site (http://art.neutralred.org/) but i refuse to link to it because it is godawful and deserves to be taken down nooooeeeees.
Monday, March 21st, 2005 11:34 pm (UTC)
If your second Wolfwood is anything like your second Vash, I'll be waiting XD.

Looking again at the Wolfwood, I wonder if his nose needs to be a bit bigger andd if his chin's a bit too rounded, but I'd make a lousy art critic!
Monday, March 21st, 2005 11:44 pm (UTC)
Eee. I'll try! *_*v

And aw, no, any sort of pointer is welcome. <3;;; I can't rely on myself to pick out all of my own mistakes, after all. I'll keep your points in mind next time. ^_^v

It's definitely something in the nose/chin dynamic. But it's still great-- Vash is just wonderful, and I've seen plenty of artists not get that close to Wolfwood.
Tuesday, March 22nd, 2005 06:35 am (UTC)
But then I really like him so.... I have a bias.

I didn't think you first Vash was so bad either.

I have this wallscroll. *dances* Had it since 2003. hehe. Ero implications are SO much fun to the unsuspecting to the general public. It looks cool, but it's realy such an intimate gesture when you really think about it, ne?

I'm not the biggest fan of Trigun, i prefer GunGrave(have a wallscroll of that too). But the mangaka for both, Yashiro Naitow, draws some great imagery. Too good to pass up and flaunt.
Monday, March 21st, 2005 09:23 pm (UTC)
Too good not to pass up. I mean. ^_^;;
Monday, March 21st, 2005 10:08 pm (UTC)
Gungrave was definitely the better anime, by a very long way. But that's because the Trigun anime desecrates the manga. The manga is grittier, darker, full of shades of grey and betrayals and conflicts of interest and Vash is not obsessively righteous to the point where you want to slap him. Vash in the manga watches Wolfwood kill someone, lives with it, and then admits he was wrong. Vash at the start of the manga has already killed people, albeit accidentally. Oh, and the manga has none of that het stuff.

Nope, I'm not on a mission to sell my fandom here, really....

*laughs* You sound like me when i'm reccomending Saiyuki and Saiyuki:Reload to those who say 'but it's just cartoons?'. *evil grin*

Then we hit them with the more complex storylines, adult content and raunchy jokes...

I'll have to look into the Trigun manga then. I've seen it on the shelves but as you can see, i have my other obsession....^_^;;
Monday, March 21st, 2005 10:26 pm (UTC)
Pretty, angsty... Tip of the iceberg.

Nothin' wrong with eyecandy though. *leers at Gojyo and Hakkai, and Nii and Kou in her headspace*

^_~

I'll have to look into the Trigun manga then.

Yay! Result!!! Quick word of warning, though - Trigun was Nightow's first pro project and it shows. The art in the first couple of volumes is *cough* on the rough and sketchy side, but after that it develops fast. Persevere and you will definitely be rewarded!

Not that I'll blame you for your other obsession either. 58 is currently the only pairing sparking anything like the level of interest of my VW.

Is there a lot of Trigun manga? I have only seen the dvds so I have nothing to compare it too.
Tuesday, March 22nd, 2005 07:50 am (UTC)
There's quite a bit, yeah. Trigun volumes 1 and 2 are the sketchy ones. Then Nightow had a publisher change, and the story continues directly on with Trigun Maximum volume 1. The English release by Dark Horse is currently up to TriMax 4, the Japanese is up to volume 12.

There were a lot of 'filler' eps in the anime that didn't come from the manga, and conversely there's manga stuff that wasn't put into the anime, especially in TriMax 2. But the two part company forever in TriMax 3.

I'm too dumb to understand the Trigun manga. :/ I've gotten up to book 2 of the US release of TriMax and I can't understand what the hell is going on. I don't read Japanese, though, so that may explain it.

I keep soldiering on because people keep saying how awesome it is, but I feel really really left out because I'm obviously missing something very huge. It's intensely frustrating and I've just about given up and moved on to something dumbed-down that I can actually follow.

So unless you read Japanese or are especially smart (me are college graduate! me are too dumb for Trigun!), it might not be a good idea.

...then again, that's kind of a glowing recommendation for it, if stupid people don't get it. ;)

It's not a case of being dumb. There are various reasons some people find it hard work. One is Nightow's art style in the early volumes being a bit odd, and that can make his fight scenes confusing until you develop a 'feel' for it. I know even some people who have read a fair bit of shounen action manga have found his fights a bit tricky to follow at first.

Then there's the very non-linear story-telling. A conversation or event that seems weird and random will suddenly make sense 3 volumes later when you find out more, so if you stop reading, it'll just leave the impression of confusion. Not much is ever really spelled out; it's more a case of playing join the dots as snippets of information are gradually dropped in. I'll admit to being an absolute junkie for that kind of story-telling - linear manga can be fun once, but it never prompts me to squee with enlightenment and go back and reread the earlier stuff all over again *g*. So people who just don't happen to like that kind of story-telling device won't like the manga much, no.

Oh no, I have no problem with things not being explained - I don't expect rigid storytelling. I literally cannot. tell. what. is. happening., scene by scene. Only in cases where it looks about the same as the anime, and I can say something like "well, that's the sand steamer, so I guess... this corresponds to that part of the animated version." Otherwise? It's all sound effects that I can't read.

It's not a case of understanding the scene and expecting to get deep meaning from it right away - I just can't follow it. There was a scene with Legato in (I think) TriMax 2 that was my breaking point. I literally had no idea what the hell just happened, or who everyone in the scene was. It's like reading it untranslated for all the good it does. Everyone is talking about how awesome it is, and I'm missing it, somehow.

I am too stupid, I think. (Well, "you need literal, linear storytelling" is a nice way of saying "you're stupid," so six of one.)

Heee! This has been my desktop for the last year. And I have a big wallscroll, because I'm that sad XD

I'm honored that you'd put my list of recs up on your LJ. ^^;; And I also thank you, because I put a lot of work into that list and I'm glad that more people will get a chance to look at it.

And... the porny bike freaked both me and my girlfriend out. O.o;; However, in contrast we thought that Jesus in Hogwarts was bitchin.' <3

I always find the most interesting links on your LJ. <3

As I said before, I put that list of recs up there for a reason - not just for my friend. Good Saiyuki!fic is hard to come across, ya know?
