"Papa?" Moonlight don't reach where she ground her corn.

"Chil' you kept the coin?" It is late and she is alone.

"Yes, right here. Papa, you going t'buy me free n--" her large eyes widened as the wind bent the tree and showed the moon.

"Shh don't scream chil' don't scream."

Her shriek rang across the plantation. There was rustling in the fields behind him. He reached out and twisted her head and her body collapsed in his arms.

"Bo'sun, you got the piece?"

"Yes. Go now, before they search." Never had he been so glad to be numb.

Many letters had come to him. Some were angry and attacked him personally and what he stood for. Other letters supported him and gave him advice like the little girl who asked that he grow a beard or gave him strength like the merchant couple who sent him their family heirloom for luck.

Personally, he thought the exotic gold coin was a bit morbid, but he'd kept it close because the war had needed all the luck he can lend it.

"Abe!"

"Yes dear, I'm coming." He's looking forward to the play tonight, he always admired John Wilkes Booth's work.

Yeah, it's a Lincoln story, I blame it utterly on [livejournal.com profile] commodoresexual's George Washington story and [livejournal.com profile] katemonkey for pointing it out.

The gold called to them.

"You go."
"No, I think it's your turn."

From a very specific direction.

"Liar. I got the last one."
"Pirate! You stole it from a newborn babe!"

They stared.

"This is, of course, your fault."
"How is it *my* fault?!"

Barbossa rolled his eyes at his crew. You just can't get good help these days, he thought, and strode forward...

"You *threw* the sodding thing overboard!"
"It's--urk."

...grabbed their shirts, hauled them to the rail...

"Men. They're just sharks. Ye can't die." ...and threw them overboard.

Screams floated up as the crew took bets.

The boy wobbled his way across the white space. Something shines from the folds of his hood.

"Hey, where'd you get that?" Cartman's high nasal voice always echoes strangely on new snow.

"Mmmmmmsdff." Kenny's eyes turned glazed.

"HAHA! That's a good one Kenny!" Cartman looked around. Hey, new tourists...

"Mmmmsdff!" The hood shook and Kenny’s eyes grew wide. His mittens waved desperately at the angular figures moving towards them.

"What—"

End-over-end a cutlass flew and neatly lopped off the boy’s head.

"Oh My GOD! You KILLED KENNY!" The blood sprayed unconvincingly.

The skeletons just shrugged and plucked the coin from the red fabric.

The coin sings to Johnny and seduces him with her winking gaze. She dances her curves before him and who was he to resist?

Pirate, his mind whispers, and sometimes he wonders how far he is falling into his role. But Johnny runs his fingertips across her face, lightly, reverently. Treat a lady well and she'll maybe give you the world.

He traces her with his tongue, slicks her edges and smooths his way fully around her as she lay passive and thrumming in his hands. Johnny has tasted gold since they'd started filming and tasting her was like coming home. He didn't expect to find such treasure in Hollywood's fake swag.

But it was only one night and one day, and he never found her again afterwards though Johnny tastes the precious metal throughout all the filming in the Caribbean.

When asked, he says he 'forgot' about the teeth, and insists on someone half a world away to remove them.

"...it swept down, but I hid behind the coin and the net got that instead of me."

"Wowwwwww! Uncle Gil, that reaaaally happened?"

"As real as your dad is orange." Gil solemnly looked at the little clownfish around him. "Speaking of which, you should go back now, he'll be getting worried."

"Yes Uncle Gil!" They swept around him once and swam home.

"You're good with them."

Gil turned to Nemo, who still looked pale and yellowed.

"How are you holding up kid?"

"Okay I guess. It's just that," Nemo gave a shaky laugh, "Like father like son, you know?"

"Nemo, I'm--"

"Don't. You tried to save Marina as much as I did. It wasn't your fault she got caught in the net alone."

"She. She always did love using it for a centerpiece."

"She did."

Gil felt like he swam into an eddy, and he wasn't sure which way was out.

"Nemo, I'm here if you need me." Nemo looked up, smiled a little. He swam close and brushed against Gil's side.

"Thank you Gil, I'll remember that." Nemo paused, then left.

Gil let out a sigh. He wasn't sure for what.

Piece #9 for [livejournal.com profile] circe_tigana's 882 Ways to Appease the Heathen Gods challenge (aka, The Little Mermaid Remix)

[]

The coin glimmered in the sunken ship. It was beautiful, but she thinks she likes the dinglehopper better. She keeps it in the cave anyway.

She comes back one day to find everything destroyed, and it causes her to go to the sea witch.

But little mermaid's story is told only from her point of view. She did not know her father never found her trinket cove intact. She did not know they only found it because the door was wedged open.

But everything considered, it was possibly best that the pirates destroyed her cave to find her shiny bauble.
