On my personal quirks as a reader/writer (also, prologue to my Jack/Will explaination)

Poetry is for me defined by the term ‘revelation' :

It needs to show me something I have never seen before.

And my position on the role of poetry might be extended to my views on the role of the written word, and is partly why I’m drawn towards the more lyrical styles.

I don’t *care* about simple boy meets boy, show me their minds and make me believe that every individual is unique. I don’t *care* about simply getting from here to there, show me the history of your locations in the cobbled seams, make me believe that the journey matters. I don’t. effing. *care*. About the kiss and the skin and the cum, show me the characters performing this age old dance, make me believe that I haven’t seen, read, felt, and experienced this all before.

My writing tends to be lyrical, and not especially plot driven. I recognize these faults and am attempting to justify it to myself as much as anything.

But the reason I started writing was because certain stories weren’t being told and I wanted to show people something it seems only I have seen.

Incidentally, my requirement that writing in any form needs to show me something new, explains my preferred pairings and fandoms: I roll my eyes at Qui/Obi, usually ignore Sirius/Remus, and am bored witless by Jim/Blair.

Those pairings are already, in my mind, canon. The stories are there already in place and there is practically no room, in my mind, for improvement.

I Have Seen the Light, and am not impressed; I might as well write Lily/James. Not that fabulous fic hasn’t been written on them but. It’s canon. And it’s explained.

This actually might be why I find Snape so infinitely ‘shipable, he is so impossible that anything is possible, an equal opportunity bastard. In a similar way I like Xander and Joxer for their equal-opportunity snarkiness and niceness, respectively.

It’s the realm of ‘potential’ around these characters that draws me in. It’s possibly why I love Jack Sparrow so much as well.

And for that matter, rare slash and odd pairings.

(btw, yeah, I know it's not 4pm, but math was sickening me and I needed a break...)

Plot can also work well. JK Rowling is all about plot, not lyrical writing. And so is the next part of ALT+F4: http://www.livejournal.com/users/musexmoirai/12477.html#cutid1. Wow. That was a really nice segue.
