Johnny Depp, who is currently riding high at the box office in not one but two successful films, is reportedly looking forward to the challenge of portraying Willy Wonka in Tim Burton's upcoming Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. While nothing has been finalized yet, it appears Depp has a lock on the role, and believes taking on a role that has already been memorably portrayed will be the ultimate challenge. Current plans for the film don't include musical numbers from the original, although Depp has indicated he is not advertise to belting out a song or two. The thought of Depp singing "Pure Imagination" fill us with strong emotion, but whether it's terror or delight we're not quite sure.

I want Johnny to grab my chin and say "We are the music makers, and we are the dreamers of dreams." *sigh*

It'll be very amusing to see Johnny singing. I really hope that Willy Wonka does actually go into production. Since I think Willy Wonka (book and original movie) is pretty screwed up. And Johnny is great with screwed up characters.

Personally I think Johnny as Willy Wonka would be brilliant, and I'd like to see that. He'd bring a strangeness and depth to a character who is already strange.

But singing? The musical? Not sure about that...
