wholesale from [livejournal.com profile] rahalia_cat:

If any of you follow [livejournal.com profile] lj_nifty, there have been some people posting a random image generator that randomly takes pics that you posted on your own LJs to a website elsewhere without your knowledge. One such example is this.

This could either mean you are getting your bandwidth zapped or you're having your family photos posted on a website somewhere at random intervals.

Apparently, someone confronted a website that had this code. You can read about what happened here. In a nutshell, she received a reply from LJ Support who gave this tip on how to prevent your images posted on LJ to be placed on this image generator.

Go to Admin Console.

Enter the following command:

set latest_optout yes

For communities:

set for *insert community name* latest_optout yes

Thanks for this... I read a bunch more and day-em... I'm spreading the word now.

Thank you for passing this on.
This *has* been happening to the H:tLJ screencaps I post every now and then - I could see from my webstats that at least eight such 'latest LJ picture' sites had been hotlinking to them, but had no clue what to do about it.

Thanks for posting this!

I tried to block my posts on communities, but only the admin of the community can do that.

Wow. Thanks for the heads-up. I'm having a really hard time restraining myself from chewing out that website owner in the link you posted. I may just lose my self-restraint. I think the people doing this are well-meaning enough, they just haven't thought very hard about the ramifications of their actions ... grr.

Good thing pretty much all of my entries are friendslocked.

Will that work for any pictures you post or just or for layout images?

Also, is it just for communities or will it work for regular user accounts?

Thanks for spreadig the word. I'm linking this in my lj, if you don't mind. :)

Me, too--the linking thing. Thank you, this is very helpful...

Thanks or this, handy reminder.

I don't think they can 'harvest' pics from friends-only or private posts, either. That's why my art-commission posts are now friends-only, as it happens.

Nasty invasive types. *glares at them menacingly*

[Wanders in via the Daily Snitch]

Two questions:

1. Wow, is this console thing really meant to be public? It looks like you can mess with some fairly sensitive stuff here.

2. How can I be sure I set the optout for my own LJ for the first command? There's really nothing to indicate...

1) Really sensitive stuff you aren't able to change - it's admin only. And it's all reversable.

2) You...um. You can't edit anyone *else's* journal, so I don't get the question, but let's just say if it doesn't give you an error, you're fine.

You didn't know about the console? *boggles* No offense, but how do you get anything DONE?!

set for communityname latest_optout yes

Replace communityname. Repeat line for each comm. Enter. I suggest going here (http://www.livejournal.com/community/manage.bml) to make sure that you don't miss any.
