There’s only one way to find out.

Slowly he draws his fingers along the smooth cylinder, thumb and forefinger pinching, not sharply, but lovingly. A slight turn of the wrist to loosen the shaft, the other hand cupping its light weight comfortably. The first withdrawl comes with a flood of liquid, beading off the tip and back into the receptacle. Black pearls of oil roll along the brush.

Come on, you know you want me.

He bites his lip and touches the first drop against his nail. The fibres of the brush spread out willingly, fanning themselves across the smooth surface. The heady aroma of lacquer and solvent rises.

He pauses, pleased with his handiwork.

Oh please, go on.

But won’t they talk?

Don’t tease me like this.

He re-wets the brush, using the ridged edge of the bottle to lick off the excess droplets. One by one, slowly, tantalizingly, he traces each nail in the oilblack polish. The polish clings, outlining each nail in sharper contrast.

Before he knows it, the last nail is painted. Then there is only the sad afterglow, watching the wet gleam of the polish dry to its diamond shine. His nails are ten jet-black jewels, shining like cut glass.

When he caps the bottle it is almost with a reluctant sigh. Perhaps it could have lasted longer.
