So. Like recently I've been pretty much thinking about vids non-stop and I've been going into vid farr except I'm preventing myself from 'farr-ing which hasn't really been working, 'cause like, Eternal Sunshine vid is nearing done and Prophesy vid is pretty much there too (will try to bring both to MD's for beta).

And, of course, wonderful vid discussion going around here. And in answer to part of that discussion, more discussion here.

And both of them has mention of the issue of getting honest and thorough critique, because for people who are searching for this sort of analysis this kind of critique is extremely hard to find. I am not saying that there is anything wrong with not wanting analysis, and I'm not trying to disturb other people enjoyment of entertainment for entertainment's sake. But what I, myself (and I'm only speaking for myself), like to do is attempt to understand why things work the way they do on a subconscious level. What I try to do in this attempt-to-understand-the-workings-of-things is to understand how to help a vid reach out to different people on several levels. So I, personally, would *love* to get a review of this nature: sort of a "roses and thorns", so that I can see what I'm doing wrong so I can change it as well as finding out what I'm doing right, so that I can do more of it.

Both [livejournal.com profile] tazey and [livejournal.com profile] sdwolfpup has mentioned LJ comms for this and forums and many ideas are being batted around, go add your own input too! =D

And in the effort to perhaps generate discussion, how about this: If you're a vidder and would like your vid publicly reviewed, comment with a link to your vid, and I'll do so in a public post. I'll address in-depth vidding techinique from the barebones of the technical, all the way up to narrative; and attempt to understand the aim of your vid and try to give critique that might perhaps help you reach the aim more fully. But I won't give a piece of critque without a piece of squee, so the feedback will have it at a 1:1 ratio; and I'll host the discussion in the post.

In return, and if you find the review helpful, I wouldn't mind a review of any my vids that you feel up to reviewing.

Granted, there are some vids that I don't know if I can help, because they are beyond my level or because I can't quite tell what their aim was and thus don't know *how* to help. Or, in the case of [livejournal.com profile] lierdumoa, we think far too much alike and I can't really help her. In any case, I'll tell you that and try to find someone who *can* help.

Good idea / bad idea? I thought I might throw the concept and offer out, can't know if you don't try, eh?

Oh, yes please. Real Player version or Windows Media Player version. I know that this is a fandom that you're not all that familiar with (Buffy) but I think in the case of this vid, thats almost a plus. My primary focus was visualising the music through effects and various other techniques.

I have been meaning to feedback "Sunburned" for a while now, so will be more than happy to get onto that ASAP.

If you don't mind me saying that is a very nice video :D

I would love to get those kind of reviews as well and almost never do. I think I give off a fragile vibe and people are afraid to hurt my feelings.

What they don't realize is that whatever they say, even if it is negative or perceived as negative by me, it cannot possibly be worse than any of the horrible things I've said about my own poor, abused little mutant vid-children. Often, I find something intended as a negative comment to be reassuring as in "Oh, they actually got part of that and didn't like it." as opposed to "No one understands what I am trying to do."

It would be incredibly useful to know what people understand and what they find confusing or how they interpret what I've done rather than having to guess.

Of course, I forgot the link. www.triptych vids.com

The one I'm most curious about would be "I Saw Her Standing There" on the Buffy page. Is it too obvious? Is it unclear? It's one of the vids I've made that I am most uncertain about.

You know, I thought of this one because of all of the vids I have done, I hate it the most. It is the one I am afraid to look at. It is one of the first vids I ever did all by myself and predates the first Vividcon.

Since you asked me this question I decided to brave a glance through it. And I think I can answer my own questions. The opening is too slow. The bits of attempted humor at the beginning are not as funny as they should be. I think I may have been timing the bridge to a completely different song.

It seems to start out as teen-angst romance, get way way too dark, then turn camp with no warning whatsoever. The whole thing hinges on Angel smoking/john Lennon screaming but, that moment really doesn't work and if you don't buy the moment where Jody Foster decides she actually likes Dennis Hopper, you may as well not even watch the rest of the movie.

I am still interested to hear what people have to say, though. But, am starting to think that "be My Luck" would be a more productive choice because I haven't decided I hate it yet.

Oh, I love you for offering this.

My lone finished vid is Live Till I Die (http://www.squidge.org/~marycrawford/vids/index.html). (It's also on the Escapade 2005 set.) Critical feedback very very welcome. I'm working on a second vid, in another fandom, and there are so many things that I have to gain a feeling for - color palettes, effects, intercutting, fast cuts, all the shiny that you handle so well - without losing the thread of the vid.

How would you want to organize this, with the return review? In separate posts, me in my LJ and you in yours? Or maybe just all in comments here?

And also, I was thinking that seeing other vidders ask for feedback here makes me want to respond, at least to say what I liked in their vid - is it OK to do that in this post, or any others you put up? Because I read the above and now I want to tell Jackie what I thought about "I Saw Her Standing There", but only if you don't mind. :-)

If you wouldn't mind reviewing a vid from an unfamiliar fandom: Feelin' Alright (http://kimera.anyanka.net/suburbn/prvids.htm).

Yepyup!

There are some things I feel I need to work on, some things I wish I'd done better with this vid in particular, and I'm curious to know if your thoughts on my vid align with my own at all.

yes, please

Tango, ideally, as that's the one I've had the least f/b on ever, but Maid on the Shore" if you'd rather stick to familiar source.

And do me last, please; I'm only online via internet cafes this week and will be a long time doing one of yours in return, so no sense making other people wait.

Fandoms, btw: Cambridge Spies, Dealers, Carrington.

You don't need to know them, I don't think; *I* actually don't know one of them. *blushes*

Really, it's Fandom: Sex.

Can I just say how incredibly cool it is that you've done a vid to a Stan Rogers song? This brings me so much glee.

STAN FAN! YAY!

Actually I'm working on another one, too. His stuff is just so viddable...
Friday, May 6th, 2005 02:23 pm (UTC)
Understood. That is the general idea, honest. :-)

Because on the one hand? I'm still very fond of it. And on the other? For some odd reason it just sort of landed with a wet splat. And having gone past the fiercely protective phase, I'm genuinely curious as to why.

Oooh! Oh! Me! If you don't mind critiquing for XF, I just realized that Porcelain's 3-year anniversary was yesterday, so...that one? :)

I would love to get some feedback, because I usually make vids in very small fandoms (or rather I make vids from films that doesn't have a fandom at all) and thus it's hard to get any kind of feedback.

I would love to get some help with my two recent vids. Since I finished these two I have kind of lost my inspiration...I don't know what to do next and right now vidding feels complicated. Maybe if I get some pointers, if I knew what I need to work on and what I'm doing that is ok, I will be able to get some new ideas.

Choose one of the vids if you don't have time to do both! And I'm of course happy to give you some feedback in return. Choose one or two of your vids that you would like me to comment on. :)

If you follow the links you will find both mpg and wmv versions...

Crucify (http://www.livejournal.com/users/sofiaaifos/24485.html)
Song: Crucify by Tori Amos
Film: The Reckoning (With Paul Bettany and Willem Defoe)
In this vid I was playing around with editing and special effects more than trying to tell a clear narrative.

Lay Lady Lay (http://www.livejournal.com/users/sofiaaifos/39901.html)
Song: Lay Lady Lay by Bob Dylan
Film: The Heart of Me
In this one I was on the other hand trying to tell a story and I tried to keep the editing as simple as possibe and just work on the narrative.

Thanks, I'm looking forward to it. :)

Constructive criticism is exactly what I want. I'm not looking for praise, I have friends who can give me that if I wanted it... ;) I'd like to know what you think I could do better. I'd like to know what you think doesn't work.

I do however believe that vidding, as any creative practice, is subjective and what I like, might not be what you like (and the other way around). But it would be interesting to know what you think.

I would love to get some feedback on my latest vid I am You for the movie Gangster no 1. It might help to know that Paul Bettany's character as an old man is played by Malcolm McDowell. In case you've downloaded the vid before this is a new version of it that I uploaded today.

I'd be happy to review one of yours. It will probably be your vid for either Hero or The Fifth Element.
