(Saw Serenity last night.)

"I am a leaf on the wind."

So I google-searched, 'cause I was curious...it's an inspirational story apparently:

Leaf was shaking and Wind could see the fear beginning to overtake Leaf. Wind added, "Keep your promise not to give in to hate and sorrow and when the time comes for you to fall, I will be there to catch you. It will be a beginning and not an end for you."

"You are falling! Plunging," shouted Tree.

"I am soaring like a little bird," Leaf sang out. "See how I go!"

Leaf felt something lift it up. It was Wind come to keep its promise. "I cannot take you far right now, just to rest on the ground. No matter what happens, do not be afraid. I will return for you."

It actually makes a lot of sense to me. He completed his goal, and rather miraculously, at that. And then, just when you're about to relax, when you're about to go, okay, things are all clear, Joss reminds you that things are never that easy. That when you're surrounded on all sides, one miracle just isn't enough.

It tears me up, because it's so damn sad, but I can't complain about how it was done, because as much as I want him not to have died, Joss did it really, really well.

*nods* As much as I hate to admit it, it made the rest of the movie that much more tense, because it snapped me out of my belief that Main Characters Don't Die. From that point on, I almost couldn't believe in a happy ending, and I was on the edge of my seat until the credits started rolling.

That's a really good point. I hadn't articulated it that way, but it's completely true. I half expected the first death, because he was no longer strictly a main character. But having a Main Character just suddenly no longer be alive made me terrified. I was convinced that everyone was going to die and there was going to be some awful, sad ending where maybe one person got out, maybe. And in the midst of all my shock, little details stood out and made sense; things worked better, because I was suddenly 200% more emotionally invested in the movie.

Yes! I went in knowing somone would die (to a preview) and was totally relaxed and coasting after that remarkably moving death because... it was over. There is no WAY Joss would allow anything worse than that to happen. And that was my big mistake that led to me having an ulcer attack because after "the leaf on the wind" bit? I was convinced everyone was dying and it would be a horrible death and I was gonna have to watch it and I COULDN'T BREATHE and there was total physical investment in the outcome.

And you just can't say enough about something that gives you that kind of reaction because death is sudden and cruel and unfair and will take the person you love best in the world out of it.
