So I'm prepping a vid for release and once again peering through all those encoding options, which I should theoretically just go ahead and use Xvid except it takes up to an hour to encode 5 minutes that, chances are, won't work properly.

...

This is why WMM is a godsend.

But that's beyond the point, which is namely that I found this thing called 'ffdshow Video Codec' on my computer and it has available an oddly huge number of codecs available for use including MPEG4, MJPEG, and Huffyuv. o.0 For one thing, when did this happen, and for another, I thought I uninstalled Huffyuv.

My computer's magical, yo.

Or it's just that amazingly awesome amv vidding package that [livejournal.com profile] absolut3destiny made, for which I still owe him my soul. ::SOUL::

Also, what's Theora? It mentions that it's experiemental, decent quality, uses I frames, probably doesn't make Premiere happy. ::pokes at encode:: huh. Oh, and it appears that I *don't* have Huffyuv anymore, it's just LYING. woe. Ah well, all shall return once my computer's brain gets larger.

And "Skal's MPEG 4" instead of "MPEG 4"? ::pokity:: It tempts me to do side-by-side comparisons.

Or that could just be the codeine.

[edit] "Skal's MPEG 4" appears to export something that's both larger and darker than MJPEG. Attempting MPEG4 now...

[edit2] oooooh, dvix appears to be a version of mpeg4? (or is an option under the option of mpeg 4...or something) ::peers and pokes some more::

[edit3] ...which would explain the 2 passes thing required. hmmm... ::goes to output in mpeg1 and mpeg2::

[edit4] wow. mpeg1 outputs like this splurt of boxy pixel-things and acid-trips through the entire vid in 5 sec increments. (reminds me a bit of my avant-garde film class it does.)

[edit5] conclusions so far: mpeg1 and mpeg2 doesn't like me though mpeg4 does. Skal's mpeg4 likes me less than normal mpeg4, Theora seems to do well, but is probably not widely compatible. Trying 'ms mpeg' and 'mpeg2 mpeg4' (<~macroblocking, eschermovemts)...

[edit6] OMG itdoesn'tlookcrappy! ::bounce!:: and filesize is all tiny and cute. gonna try 'msmpeg' on 2 pass...

[edit7] ...which is a mite large. ::stumped:: perhaps it just wants a bit o' fondling and tweakage...

[edit8] more testing in the morning I think, will run divx for comparision in the meantime...
