How to Make Really Tasty Mochi

First of all, you need to break your heart. You can have it broken for you if you want, because breaking your own heart is hard, but something you make yourself will always be better. It just is.

Also, you should be really, really hungry.

- - - - -

October 28th, cool and windy.

Selling mochi is so fun. It's better than when I worked at the teahouse, because I don't need to run around getting tea and snacks for customers, I just wrap up the mochi and smile, and Fumiko-san is very kind when I get confused about how much each type of mochi costs, and what their names mean. She also let me try all the types of mochi she had for sale, and when I said something was really good, she would let me have some more.

Most of the customers were very nice when Fumiko-san told them it was my first day there. But some annoying creeps came and kept bothering me, and they didn't even buy anything. Luckily, a cute young man came and got the police to chase them away. Jin and Mugen would have killed them and trashed the place. That would be really bad. Shuuichi-kun stayed to chat with me for a while afterwards. He thought Momo was very cute.

I think I ate too much mochi today, but Fumiko-san's mochi are all so tasty! I'm not sure if I managed to sell enough to pay for all the mochi I ate, but Fumiko-san laughed and said not to worry, that just meant I would know about all the different types of mochi she sells. But I think I need to try all the different types of mochi again tomorrow, because I don't remember all of them. They are all really tasty, though. I must work harder so that Fumiko-san can make lots of money and keep selling mochi.

Fumiko-san gave me a little room of my own, with a lamp and futon. I nearly sat on Momo when Momo went to sleep in the middle of my futon under my blanket. Silly Momo!

It's kind of quiet.

So like, this is hilarious and cute and funny and twisty and really really hilarious.

Really now, do ya'll have a *problem* with laughing? ::makes squinty face::

Title: Change (in the House of Pete) by [livejournal.com profile] lierdumoa
Fandom: Fall Out Boy (Pete/Patrick)
Summary: Figures that despite this being all Pete's fault, Patrick would still somehow end up being the Rumpelstiltskin in this fucked up scenario.
"Where the fuck did you get a changeling?"

"In the waters of the dark East well under the light of the gibbous moon."

"The waters of the what now?"

"It's this place. Mortals can't really go there."

"And you can because...."

"I'm fey? Dude, I told you this ages ago."

Patrick stumbles around his kitchen counter until he finds a stool, then sits down heavily. "Dude, I thought you were joking."

So...

::cough:: See, I have this thing where I'm highly facinated/amused by rage, part of it is intellectual admiration and part of it is envy and wistfulness.

And part of it is just because righteous outrage, done right, is beautiful. And if it's done better it's hilarious.

"My girlfriend doesn’t understand what I see in Star Wars. We’ve had several soul-crushing arguments about what exactly makes this series so important to me, and every time I have found it more and more difficult to argue my case. As the maddening years have wound on, I think I finally understand the reason for this crippling handicap.

There is a diabolical twist to Star Wars fandom, you see, that defies comprehension, and yet is the life-blood of all Star Wars fans. It is this:

Star Wars fans hate Star Wars."

And it goes on and on and ON; as only a true Star Wars fan could.

And...at the end says something that's perhaps true of *all* fans as well.

The Complex and Terrifying Reality of Star Wars Fandom

WHOAAAAAAAAAAAA. ::FLAILS::

So like, I visited [livejournal.com profile] runefallstar and [livejournal.com profile] karotsamused this weekend and they pimped Dai-Guard at me, and like WHOA.

I mean, initially I got curious at it because it was described to me as the bastard child of Evangelion (and various other mecha Anime) and Office Space.

Office. Space. With Mecha.

Which is shitloads of awesome with really nice ensemble cast and some lovely subtext,

BUT DUDE, I'm getting into the later eps and HOlY FUCK. It's has office politics and red tape and international bruhaha and head-butting with the government and does interesting play with the whole Weapons of Mass Destruction concept. Also! It has an really interesting thing with the differences between Teamwork and Following Orders which is a really rare distinction to see, in like, y'know, a Mecha anime.

It...WHOA.

Unfortunately, the anime is apparently really fucking rare. But me and [livejournal.com profile] runefallstar and [livejournal.com profile] karotsamused think there might be a way to properly pimp this... ::schemes:: =D

[edit] [livejournal.com profile] zero_sleep points out that there's a working torrent up!! ::cheers!!::

Okay, so I don't rec books very often, but dude. dude.

To give context for the flailing: I've recently (read: in the past month or so) had conversations with several different people about the inability to concentrate/focus/get-things-done/organized.

I so very sympathize, because it took the longest fucking time trying to figure out what worked for me and a lot of trial and error. Alot of it was because I frankly hate being tied to time and the fact that I'm a pattern thinker rather than a linear one. And one of the consequences of being a pattern thinker is that when I explain things I don't tend to do it in a very coherent way, so it's hard for me to explain exactly *how* I'm organizing things. Especially since it's a system that superficially looks no different from any other system.

BUT! I found a book! It was completely by random today while browsing my local B&N and I got curious at the title. And when I skimmed through it I went, "huh." And then read it from cover to cover, giggling and being sorta stunned all at once, because most of the stuff they mention I already do. It's methods that I've found works for me, but someone actually wrote it all down! It's this:
Organizing for the Creative Person: Right-Brain Styles for Conquering Clutter, Mastering Time, and Reaching Your Goals
(ebay link, Powell's link, Powell's link to another book that's similar)

Which, y'know, was like a moment of "oh DUH" when I realized that their methods was what I was doing with my folders and lists and post-its. For the longest while I just felt kinda stupid having to do the things I did because I for the life of me cannot get "organized" in the traditional sense. I felt like I was constantly fighting my brain, which should've been able to handle these simple stupid day-to-day shit by normal methods. (...which, gah, yes. I keep forgetting sometimes, that I'm not and probably never will be normal and that "user default settings" will never work right for me.)

It's like...like whoa, there's a name for this! That...that I'm not just, like, incompetent when I depend on these things to keep me organized. Which, honestly? whoa.

So, ya'll realize that Dead Man's Chest was reaaaaaally thorough in their research?

And like, [livejournal.com profile] th_nightengale meta'ed really much a lot about that dice game, Perudo, they were playing, it's historical accuracy, and how it relates to characterization of Will, [spoiler character], and [spoiler character].

Her post is here: so about them dice...

And we're pretty sure as to the dice-faces and to the bets that actually occured in the game, seeing as we've watched the game five times already (::covers eyes:: I know, shaddup), and took paper notes.

In other news, PotC:DMC looks REALLY FUCKING AWESOME on digital projector.

That is all.

The Boy Was A Puppet new vid by [livejournal.com profile] wistful_fever

OH HOLY FUCK. Like, I got shivers constantly through this, fantastic fanstastic fantastic vid with awesome use of color and it's the world utterly CRASHING down on Harry, it's the magical world in all it's beauty except it wants to consume Harry, and he loves and hates it, but he's a puppet in the end and it creeps in and eats like dark fire. This vid, it's dark and bright all at once, beautiful and shivery and compelling.

'k, so I'm finally sorting through a lot of backlogged comments and emails and stuff, and many apologies for the lateness but, better late than never I suppose? ::wry grin::

Meanwhile, here's some cool links that were passed along to me...

- zSHARE - Free Image, Video, Audio, Flash and File Hosting. As far as I can tell, it's pretty much like yousendit, but better, because it keeps your files up as long as someone downloads them at least once every 10 days.

- [livejournal.com profile] darkfanfic - It's a locked community so that you don't have to worry about posting fic too dark and/or warning labels. ::shakes tiny asian fist at warning labels::

- Chocolate Sushi - no seriously. Sushi that looks like sushi, made from chocolate. InSANELY detailed, and kinda really expensive, but DOODE. socool.

- Elvis Plushenko stripping on ice - Granted, it's foam muscles, but he jiggles them SO delightedly that I can't help cackling in glee...

- Grey Matter - The writer's blog for Grey's Anatomy, very neat, and apparently they read the comments

- ThinkGeek - "Stuff for Smart Masses", with neat stuff like Space Age Ant Habitats, the Swiss Memory USB, and Caffeine Molecule t-shirts. =D

- Google: Tiananmen? Never Happened! - Google has been censoring search results on it's Chinese search engine to placate the Chinese government, like, y'know, the Tiananmen Square Massacre. At least Google is putting up notices that this censoring is taking place, instead of it just being a black hole of informationlessness.

Le Sigh. See, while I'm outraged at the whole "Censorship=Bad" thing, I can understand their wish to present a better face to the world and stuff. It's kinda similar to the whole, "Oh, I'm a Californian, but not as much American" phenomenon I sometimes encounter, like, splicing off the parts of your cultural history that you not so much like. Which, yes, I understand; because it is also like looking at your personality and being conscious of it's dark places, without trying to ignore that it's there or rationalize it away. It's...like how I'm American, and in a way, culturally American, as well as being culturally fandom, as well as being culturally Asian. And I can't separate that out, and I can't say that I'm just the good parts of my cultures, as much as I want to. It kinda honestly IS making up for the sins of the father, because as much as their sins are not *directly* my fault, I'm still reaping the benefits of their sins. I profit from their sins, by living in America, by being well off, so some of it is mine and I'll figure out how best to give back eventually...

- Soft Skull: No More Prisons by William Upski Wimsatt - ...which is perhaps a good segue into this book, which I'm waiting for. Got recced it by someone on my flist and it looks all sorts of awesome.

- Ryan Reynolds' official myspace blog - this is hilarious and cracktastic. Observe:
Driving down the highway I like to stare at other motorists. Mainly, because I can't believe the shit they do while driving. Putting on makeup, eating bowls of cereal, typing on their laptop, getting dressed, working both a cell phone AND a Blackberry, etc... It's actually impressive because they're doing this while hurdling two tons of gasoline infused steel down a major metropolitan expressway. Do they have any clue how dangerous this is? That's about when I realize I'm not watching the road. I'm watching other people not watch the road. Then there's a tremendous amount of airbags, blood, and little chunks of Buick in the back of my throat and the smell of burnt toast and how did my car get so small? Am I airborn?

Also, the anonymous comments page for the Escapade 2006 vidshow is available here, if you hadn't been able to comment on a vid seen at Escapade yet. Awesome idea, frankly, and would totally love to see this for other vidshows too. =)

1) had a hella good time at [livejournal.com profile] morgandawn's with [livejournal.com profile] laurashapiro and [livejournal.com profile] lierdumoa, vid-talk was had by all with much good squeeing and discussion to be had and an LKBV was getting planned and plotted. (Muhahahaha!)

2) spent an evening following [livejournal.com profile] fashes around like puppy and sucked up information like SPOOONGE. SPONGE I SAY. ahem. but yes! Got only half the things done that [livejournal.com profile] fashes needed to but a good time was had by all.

3) spent the rest of the evening squeeing over SGA with [livejournal.com profile] lierdumoa. Repeatedly. I think it took us maybe an hour and a half to watch ~45 min because we had to pause-squee-rewind-squee over and over again. That was SUCH a good ep! (and I TOTALLY called the Volcano! ::shimmies::)

4) Came back that evening to find out that not only did I miss 8 calls on my cell from the parental unit, but also 3 calls on my land line. And yesterday I got 8 MORE calls. wtf, man. [livejournal.com profile] fashes? I think I'll need that 'Toxic Parents' book sooner rather than later. (honestly, I'm surprised that I came out as sane as I did, which is to say 'not very' though I can fake it well enough most times)

5) at last count I have over 200 SGA recs bookmarks. o.0;; I'm totally figuring out this del.icio.us thing 'cause doode.

6) Escapade! And if you haven't already, go vote at the Panel Ballot, to help decide what panels will be available at the con. (Like, say, if you want me and [livejournal.com profile] lierdumoa to host Deus Detruditur Machina (SGA & BSG, Wherein "God is returned to the machine.")...)

7) needless to say, I am so *very* behind on both fic and my flist due to RL. If there's anything you want me to eyeball feel free to post links to it here in this post!

8) [livejournal.com profile] fabu is smart like a smart-smart thing. Why haven't you friended her already? =D

In response to [livejournal.com profile] fabu's post, I've said it once but I'll say it again:

I treat this journal like a personal website, I think of it like a gigantic porch-yard party that I'm hosting that you're free to wander into and out of at your whim.

Feel free to defriend me if you wish,
feel free to chat amongst yourselves in the threads,
feel free to post Off Topic,
feel free to link to ANY of my posts or my lj handle (unless stated otherwise), I find it flattering,
and feel free to lurk (but I honestly think you'd have more fun if you dive in).

gah, I'm like, teary. It. Like, it's this slowly cut vid, but done just...beautifully with care and attention towards mood and movement and meaning. (this is the etben's fic I was referring to in the prior post that made me cry)

This is gen, but it has various pairings if you squint, and it's such GOOD gen, such really really good gen with all the character voices just NAILED and it's funny and a bit angsty and intense-in-that-happy way. Like, usually dark!fic gets this intense, but she did it in this happy!fic and it's not especially schmoopy which I find remarkable. And I *like* schmoopy, but this isn't it; it's shadowed and has bits of ashes, but it's bright.

It's reads like a mouthful of sunshine.

ex gratia - done as a favor by [livejournal.com profile] agentotter (J/R w/Sam Carter) - This is...god. It's everyone, bruised and bone-weary in that beyond-tired state when everything is simultaneously clearer and more mellow. It reads like a zen state, languid and sharp all at once.

Smart by [livejournal.com profile] brighidestone - Part of what I love about SGA is that it unrelentlessly shows how out of depth the characters sometimes are; sometimes fics forget this, and I love that this one doesn't. Reads like a held breath.

The Scientific Method
by [livejournal.com profile] cupidsbow (j/r and various) - THERE IS NO WAY TO REC THIS WITHOUT SPOILING YOU ::flails:: um. yes. It's unspeakably wonderful and HILARIOUS, and you should have read this, like, yesterday. No seriously. Reads like a roller coaster, a little up, a little down, and you're dragged along and you can't think anything but "w00t!"

Proof
by [livejournal.com profile] devildoll (j/r) - angsting John, this is one of those fics where you as audience is just laughing at him because of John's freaking out. Reads like soda pop.

Polynomials and Fixed Points
by [livejournal.com profile] diluvian (j/r and others) - ::gigglefit:: "Atlantis does the math." Only, y'know, it's math by way of relationship calculus. Reads like a rainbow sorbet float on Sprite and vodka.

Pegasus in Flight by [livejournal.com profile] luthien - wherein happiness comes in surprising ways, elegant and lyrical and lovely, reads like salt air against your throat, after you've been trapped too long inland.

Home Truth by [livejournal.com profile] ltlj (Epiphany spoilers) - a beautiful coda to the episode, honestly lovely and wonderfully written. Fantastic characterizations all around and a little achy. Smooth and a bit bitter, reads like a fine wine.

Not Even a Little Bit by [livejournal.com profile] lyrstzha - =D wherein Zelenka is "profoundly evil", I adore Zelenka and McKay friendship fics so much and this just makes me sigh in the happy. Reads like a fresh buttered mini-croissant, adorable and a bit crispy.

Quality Time by [livejournal.com profile] mandysbitch (“Rodney McKay, as it turned out, was a complete slut.”) - wherein John's miffed that Rodney's on timeshare. ::gigglefit:: Decadently hilarious and reads like summertime bubbles.

A Little Learning by [livejournal.com profile] laceymcbain ("John isn't dealing well with how he thinks Rodney is coping.") - wherein John's miffed that Rodney's...on timeshare. ::GIGGLEFIT:: These two stories are meant to be together. This reads like an everlasting gobstopper, it changes on your tongue but never stops being good.

A Not-So-Modest Proposal by [livejournal.com profile] reccea - This is really enormously good and tremendously long. Seriously, have you read this yet? 'Cause you SHOULD, it's been recced long and often for good reason. Reads like a drunken evening spent with hilarious witty friends.
The door closed and Rodney said, "We should get married."

John set his laptop aside on the bed. "I'm sorry?" It wasn't actually the first marriage proposal that John had received but at least before there had been warning signs and, hell, a basis. "Rodney, we're not even dating."

First of all, hie ye off to read [livejournal.com profile] yuletide fics, they are many and they are AWESOME. There's new Care Bears BDSM there (this is different from the one I recced before, and how odd is *that*?), some awesome Mr. and Mrs. Smith, and it's been a really really good year for Samurai Champloo. REALLY good year.

SGA fic (assume McKay/Sheppard unless stated otherwise)

Atlantis In Tatters by Ekaterinn - dear lord this is angst, beautiful achy angst. Reads like ashes and bitter coffee grounds. Hurts in a seeping way.

Small World
by tigs (gen, "Only ten minutes into the 33rd Annual International High School Sciences Competition and already John was in Hell.") - I LOVE these kinds of stories, the second meeting stories and John angsting 'cause he doesn't want the price of his smartness. Reads like lemon sorbet, provided you don't have a citrus allergy.

Fins by FairestCat (Elizabeth fic) - oh god, but this is *good*, this reads like the peta-conferencing of Laura Shaprio's West Wing vid Circles, only pitched in colors of red and bronze. It's swirling and lively and funny and smooth smooth smooth in an amazing way like a knot, but it's not suffocating. Go see!

Neither Helpful Nor Comforting by [livejournal.com profile] 20thcenturyvole - awesome voices, awesome plot, frightening and hilarious and beautifully absurd at points. Reads like watching a horror movie with your best friend.

Constellation by Purna (team gen) - Just a beautiful snippet of the team, wonderful and smooth and calming. Reads like a warm cup of tea.

Seven Circles Twisting by Brighid (team gen) - ...like. fuck. I mean, it's rare that a fic truly scares me, y'know? Or rather, perhaps, that it takes a lot to truly scare me, fic-wise. But this fic is simultaneously so very visceral and all about the empty spaces between the words. But this tastes of night, it tastes of night. ::shivers::

Ducks and Other Things That Quack from [livejournal.com profile] sga_santa (expedition gen) - You need this after the fic above. It's a beautiful and refreshing look at the expedition from the tail end, it's the day-to-day little joys. I love this Lorne, he may not *completely* understand, but he gets it and he protects it and there's just this beautiful fondness throughout the piece. Reads like a warm flannel blanket.

Lesser Homes And Gardens from [livejournal.com profile] sga_santa (Lorne/Parrish) - For the little that we see of Lorne and Parrish interact, this fic pulls it out and expands it so nicely and organically that, yes, I can see it like this, just like this. It's the soldier/scientist dynamic, but very different from that of the John/Rodney, and it's so very Lorne, which I just have an utter soft spot in my heart for 'cause he's so very much Rodney's "younger brother who tells on him 'for his own good'". Reads like warm miso soup and a fond smile.

Inflated from [livejournal.com profile] sga_santa (third person POVs on John/Rodney) - ohhhh but outsider POV on a relationship is one of my fic hot buttons and this fic does it so *well*. SO incredibly well, it skips through various POVs and you gradually find out what's going on and it just makes me squirm in delight because each of the other characters are written *so* well too. Reads like great champagne at the end of a great party, still bubbly and nicely cooled.

Those of ya'll who've read my journal for awhile should find this familiar...

::waves to new people:: here's the thing, I tend to pimp stuff like whoa, and I've been finding myself very distracted and distanced from fandom for a long time. In fact, it's really really hard for me to consider myself participating in fandom unless I'm pimping something. (For the past half-year or more this journal's felt like more of a blog than anything else, it felt highly *weird*)

But it's winter break now! ::GLEE:: And I have FREE TIME.

[]

SGA fic (assume McKay/Sheppard unless stated otherwise)

Caffeinated by Frostfire - Wherein there is coffee and John Sheppard as Angelina Jolie. Reads like the warm burble of a percolator in the morning.

Wedding Day by [livejournal.com profile] sdraevn - Wherein Elizabeth wants to cry at a wedding and John and Rodney PANICS LIKE WHOA. There is a reception and a hilarious Ronon and *great* use of SG1. Reads like being drunk on a hella lot of high quality spiked egg-nog.

Charting The Motion Of Planets by [livejournal.com profile] dasha - Oh, this is just *neat*, it's Rodney's characterization done very interestingly in a high-pressure situation, definatly sometime pre-Epiphany but in a very specific way, ditto with John. Reads metallic, a muted shine.

Equilibrium by [livejournal.com profile] lyndac - Rodney watches with doubled-vision and wants. Reads like a breath held high in the throat.

Reality TV by Ruby101 - "The Ancients had excellent screen resolution, John thought darkly." ::gigglefit:: it is cute and delightful in all sorts of ways. Reads like a weekend morning. (and GOD I want that machine for vidding...)

Doctor/Patient Confidence by [livejournal.com profile] custardpringle (second part of harlequin challenge fic, first part linked to in the notes) - oh god, but this is beautiful, I love the first part for scratching my harlequin itch, I love the second part for how splendidly it connects the first part to a plausible AU. And just ::flails:: it hits all sorts of my AU hot!buttons. Reads like sleep-warm sheets and tumbling slowly awake.

And I Would Be by Brighid (season 1 spoilers) - great intertwining of two timelines for a view of John Sheppard, just lovely. Reads like chain-links and metallic lace.

Flush by Shaye (SPOILERS: Up through "Critical Mass" 2.13) - beautiful characterization all around which is remarkable for it being an ensemble fic, I smiled throughout reading this. Reads like puttering through a full kitchen, after the booze is passed out, in the bustle before dinner is served.

Sometimes...

Sometimes there's crack. And then sometimes there's good crack.

And sometimes there's the special crack.

Sometimes crack comes along that's so special that you cannot encompass it.

Are we surprised that this crack is in SGA?

(They have Teyla singing like a hobbit. And this is SGA canon. So you realize the depths to which fanfic has to run to catch up.)

They went to the Asgard alien, Hymen or Hernia or whatever his name was. They didn't care, their minds were preoccupied with the matter at hand.

"Put our cocks back," John hissed threateningly. "It's awkward me having Rodney's cock and him having mine. It's probably against U.S. military policy."

"So many faces of death--it must be a shame having only one life to lose."

"Yes, here we go." Rodney sighed and lay back. "Mock away."

"Want me to tie you up?"

"God, I thought you'd never ask." Rodney sat back up and shucked his shirt and pants while John watched, amused on the surface, something darker in his eyes. "You brought rope?"

~ weapons, trees, chocolate, and bondage by [livejournal.com profile] eliade - ::combusts:: um. ::flails:: yes.

He loves them and the men around him, and the men they're fighting, and this country and it seems like he's been reaching for something his whole life that he's just now finding. He doesn’t know what to call it – peace, love, understanding, goodwill toward men, whatthefuckever – but there it is, right there in the sky, in the blood colored dirt, painted over everything like a gloss. This is world is all there is, and it is enough, it is more than enough, it is wonderful, John thinks. And if only he can keep hold of that when he wakes up, he thinks, eyes drooping closed. God, if only he can keep hold of it, he’ll always have this in him, this laughter, this calm, this love. If only.

~ Bullets by the Door by [livejournal.com profile] nifra_idril ("Afghanistan was fucking beautiful.") - this is one of those fics that I could only process by reading bits in reverse order, but ooooh a great peek into Sheppard's mind!

"Good thing I have you to do these things for me." John's posture was lazy, so was his tone and his smile.

Do these things for him. That's what Rodney was there for. To do things for John. Because John was the hero and Rodney was the guy who kissed other men in front of half his staff. Standing, Rodney leaned over the table, took hold of John's jacket and pulled him out of his slouch. Then he kissed him, hard. "There are some things you should do for yourself," he said, letting go of John with a slight shove.

Then he pushed his breakfast tray to John's side of the table. "Put this away for me, will you?" He turned and walked away.

Away and straight into Katie. "Rodney?" she asked.

Assume McKay and Sheppard in some combination.

To Know You're Alive by [livejournal.com profile] callmerizzo (Post-Siege fallout) - a marvelous John POV, this is like the compression of breath, wound up all tight until a glorious exhale.

Lemon by [livejournal.com profile] lalejandra (several of the labs have a mysterious lemon odour) - delightful and lighthearted, reads like sea air.

The Pegasus Society by [livejournal.com profile] iamsab (Season One, post-"The Brotherhood") - This. Ohgod. This is like she highjacked this world and this fic directly into my brain, it's almost Atlantis POV, but not. This is Atlantis stained-glass, this is a John that doesn't trust easy things and a Rodney that doesn't stop when he's confused and an Atlantis that kind of likes to watch. It's a waking dream, that doesn't have the lethargy of dreams and it's not surreal at all because you're *in* the dream and it makes perfect sense. It ends perfectly. ::in awe:: Just, yes. ::points:: That's my show.

Supplemental by [livejournal.com profile] lierdumoa (Teyla gets a lesson in mechanics. The physics kind, not the car kind. Rodney loses his pudding cup. Hijinks) - This reads like one of those really really tall jello towers in the sunlight, the ones made with champagne. It catches the sunlight and throws it everywhere, all bubbly and wiggly and you feel all drunk and hilarious and happy at life at the end.

Sliding Scale by [livejournal.com profile] trinityofone (It suddenly struck him: for two guys who were enthusiastically balling each other every night (and after lunch, when convenient) they certainly spent a lot of time talking about women.) - Honestly, you should just read everything this girl's written. No. Seriously. EVERYTHING. Right now. This is her most recent and it's good to start off with, marvelous voices, great characterization, reads like a tongue-in-the-cheek with a mouth full of fine, complex dark chocolate.

What You Might Call Obvious by [livejournal.com profile] giddygeek (post Hive) - Marvelous, snarky, hot, and beautiful in many different ways, reads like surprised laughter, like sudden joy.
"That's 87 orgasms for every time I almost died," John said. "You'd give up 87 orgasms just because--oh my God, you've got me thinking about it. Get out, McKay."

Rodney looked at him. He showed no signs of leaving but he was rubbing his hands over each other nervously, and his expression was tight, almost miserable. "I'd, uh. I’d give up a million orgasms if it meant I never had to see you vanish from the screen again, Sheppard."

"But giving up orgasms wouldn't mean--I haven't not died because we're not having sex!"

1) Saw Harry Potter movie this past Friday. It was MUCH of the good and Voldemort is very very hot along the lines of Imhotep and he presses Harry's forehead scar like it's, well ::cough::, a very very special place. Also? Myrtle! Also? CEDRIC! Also??? HOT BULGARIAN BOYS OMG.

(umm, I don't suppose there's any Cedric/Harry fic anywheres? found! Or maybe Victor/Hermione? Or Victor/Ron? Or Karkaroff/Snape-in-a-potion's-closet-where-they-make-sure-not-to-touch-the-walls-like-vaguely-the-iron-maiden-all-over-again-except-it's-snape's-hands-on-karkaroff,-snape's-hands,-for-which-karkaroff-would-forgive-many-things ::cough::)

2) Grey's Anatomy! Burke! (preston!) And George! (oh george!) And THE NAZI! ::DIES:: And Izzy being Most Sane and Christina running to her Safe Place 'cause she's omgsojealous. God I love this show.

Btw, check out [livejournal.com profile] mimesere's post-apocalyptic fic, Grey's Apocalypse. It gets all my happy pairing places and is a simply lovely read!

(god, is there a community for Grey's Anatomy fic yet? Or even just fic for this show? ::woe!face::)

3) SGA. This fandom. ::flails:: It's sunday night and I have so much reading for tomorrow and SO MUCH GOOD FIC IS POSTED. (doom.)

I will rec them now 'cause I have to many bookmarks to rec and any more added will make the head explode:

Esthesia by [livejournal.com profile] nilahasi (John) - few character studies work well with me (in general), but this one does, and does so nicely in a way that facinates me 'cause I don't know why. Reads like the slow incoming of light.

Mexico City by [livejournal.com profile] seperis (John/Rodney) - an awesome, awesome AU of magnificent porportions and much hotness. Rodney as a scientist and John as an assasin and make sure to read the first sections (linked to in the header). This hits all of my assasin kinks and is beautifully characterized and reads like honey run smooth on a hot day.

Retrograde by [livejournal.com profile] ltlj (Crossover with SG1) - I'm a bit leery of SGA/SG1 crossovers but this one did it so incredibly well, with characterizations nailed, in turns bright, in turns tragic, subtle yet deft in its darkness. It reads like a crystal twisting on a string and you see more and more of it's sides and they're all just sharp and clear and awesome.

Paper Doll Chains by [livejournal.com profile] sethoz_fics (John & Rodney) - It. ::flails:: um. Really, the only way to explain this is that this is the shape, the width and the breadth and the length, of Rodney's Hell. This reads dark and acidic, burnt bitter coffee, 'cause sometimes that's what you have a hankering for.

The Blue Pineapple Widget by [livejournal.com profile] nickeyb (John/Rodney) - This reads like bubbly-fresh sprite soda mixed with cranberry juice, it's bouncy and cute and refreshing and just right to bring a smile.

First the recs, 'cause these have been piling up and I need some form of sanity and not being afraid of my bookmarks. ::wry grin::

Assume that these are all SGA and all some form of Sheppard and McKay.

#435, The Atlantis Local Stitch'n'Bitch Chapter by [livejournal.com profile] rageprufrock - Wherein John is held close to the righteous female bosom of knitted products, Rodney is too curious for his own good, and plans fail in a spectacular way. (random thought: huh. I just realized this has a lot of what [livejournal.com profile] cereta mentions in her post on masculine and feminine spaces. huh.)

The Boys Of Summer by [livejournal.com profile] seperis - reads like the first breath of fresh air and feels like sun shining.

Advantage by [livejournal.com profile] resonant8 - Aliens make John into Rodney's slave and its both exactly what you expect and entirely surprising all at once.

Beauty by [livejournal.com profile] blinkiesays - Skip the notes on this one, the story reveals itself well enough on it's own and it reads like a melody.

The Lending Library by [livejournal.com profile] iphignia939 - The summary explains it all: "Naturally, when several hundred people moved to another galaxy, they brought porn." XD

Stargate Question: Has anyone out there seen a plentiful amount of SG-1?

I'm very curious as to SG-1's interpretation of the Ancients; ie.
both the text and subtext of the Ancient's place/position in the SG-1 universe.

For instance, in SG-1 how were the Ancient's introduced? How are their technology viewed in SG-1, textually and subtextually? How did the SG-1 characters feel about the Ancients and Ancient technology?

Fic contains SPOILERS for the movie.

AU, Firefly/Serenity / The Ship Who Sang by Anne McCaffrey

::points at the fandoms::

It has Wash as a modified Firefly.

Let me repeat myself: Wash as a ship.

Not only does this series do wonderful and interesting things with format (the telling of stories, the immediacy of friends telling each other and us stories, script-format that oddly *works* for me), but it brings me to a happy place with Firefly fandom love, with odd "found" families, with the Zoe/Wash.

Ohhh the Zoe/Wash, and I admit it it does things with fannish hot-buttons I've carried over from PotC and Jack Sparrow/Black Pearl, but in new ways and ways uniquely Firefly. AND IT MADE ME CRY. And fanfic NEVER makes me cry...

Go see!

::grins:: can you say rival!slash??

First Person Demonstrative

I'd rather
heave half a brick than say
I love you, though I do
I'd rather
crawl in a hole than call you
darling, though you are
I'd rather
wrench off an arm than hug you though
it's what I long to do
I'd rather
gather a posy of poison ivy than
ask if you love me

so if my
hair doesn't stand on end it's because
I never tease it
and if my
heart isn't in my mouth it's because
it knows its place
and if I
don't take a bite of your ear it's because
gristle gripes my guts
and if you
miss the message better get new
glasses and read it twice

- PHYLLIS GOTLIEB (via here)

also, this is the only way you'd see me reading Mal/Simon:
Mal and Simon had just fallen apart, sweaty and sated, on Simon's bed (since the beds in the passenger dorms were more spacious and comfortable than the bunks in crew quarters) when River bounded in. "Can I play?" she asked.

Mal cursed in Chinese and tried to cover himself with the sheet. It was too tightly tucked for him to pull it over himself, so he settled for using a pillow. "We're not playing, little girl," he growled.

"Yes, you are," River said, settling between them, on her back, leaning on her elbows. "You're playing at being broken, and Simon's playing at fixing you, when you know you're not really broken, and you," she looked at her brother, "know that sexual therapy is a medically approved treatment for depression only when administered by a licensed Companion." She switched gears again, smiling broadly. "I know," she said. "I'll be the crazy sister."

Before either Mal or Simon could comment on that, she had knelt up and was wriggling out of her dress.

gah, one more final to go through. Mentioned this rec to [livejournal.com profile] lierdumoa, is too good not to share:

My Journey In Hell by gelfling

Wherein Naruto does the Orpheus thing 'cause Sasuke dies and someone has to go fetch him...and Hell look sorta like Las Vegas. ::highly amused::
“Where are the rivers of blood, where are the flames, the harpies and shit! It’s just a bunch of stupid outlet shopping centers! Broken Slurpee machines! Theme park bathroom lines! Do you know how bad I have to pee!? The worst thing that’s happened to me here is some stupid kid trying to sell me broken watches!”

“Come on stupid just buy the damned watch!” said Stupid Kid.

“How come I don’t see anybody? Why’s that guy named Sharon? What kinda name is that for a guy, huh? Do you name each other Susan too! Your name’s Susan, that it!”

By this time, Naruto was *this close * to the graying man’s face, with his nose falling off and Naruto screaming, never minding the smell too much. You wouldn’t know it, but he really was quite nervous. Dead people in Hell shouldn’t be this calm.

Through his daze, Naruto realized the zombie’s hand was up his shirt, touching his stomach. His eyes didn’t even have time to widen before his body reacted.

An involved 20 seconds followed, ending up with much smaller bits of zombie. The watch-seller shut up, his broken Rolex still in his hand. Naruto turned on him.

“Your stomach’s glowing mister.”

Naruto sweated slightly.

“I have indigestion! Shut up!”

So I was reading all these articles on [livejournal.com profile] metafandom (specifically bouncing off a comment on this one) on ability/disability and race and class and well. Yes, yes they do need to be addressed, but I'm just plain sometimes wondering *how* to even balance trying to display ability and race and class decently out in a diegetic world (ie. canon) that is most likely inherently flawed in that manner anyhoo.

Like, for example, I'd attempted at one point writing in Smallville, which means writing science in Smallville, and I'd eventually gave up because Smallville science goes against the grain of huge chunks of alot of what I've learned. When I write in SV's pseudo-science it hurts and when I attempt to write in actual science it makes no sense in SV's context. o.0 Perhaps it's not so surprising that I've tended to write in fandom's where there's a mystical element; 'cause I know next to nothing of magic.

Meanwhile, have been turning over in my head that long belated post-modern cyber-punk Saiyuki AU (because everything either goes back to Saiyuki or vidding lately); because
I've always thought that Sanzo was always in this wierd half-space of Nouveau Riche, 'cause everyone at his temple probably still remembers him as a 'river rat' (or at least that's how it'll appear in his head) except simultaneously he knows and he IS all blue-blood upper-class. Now factor in Gojyo, which...yeah. And what probably bothers him a lot of the time is how similar they are occasionally; I forgot what fic it was that mentioned that Sanzo had a little Gojyo-voice in his head that he tamps down firmly (I think it might have been hane's) but MAN, when I read that I KEELED OVER.

I don't know where I was going with this and I've got to post this and run, paper this thurday WAH!, but yeah, discuss??

(U. Spiderman/ U. X-Men, Peter/Logan) Sex pollen, non-con story; and usually non-con doesn't do anything for me, but liviapenn sells it so *well*.

"Peter tries not to use words like 'bitch.' Even in his head. Even when he's being Spider-Man. *Especially* when he's being Spider-Man. First because he really doesn't need worse press than the bad press he's already got, and second because someday Aunt May is going to find out that he's Spider-Man, and then she'll go back and look at all the news reports and everything, and Peter's really trying as best he can to minimize the impact of that eventual, inevitable smack to the back of the head."

(Saiyuki, 58ish)
On his way home from the market, Hakkai decided that he needed to sweeten the pill.

As far as he could tell, Gojyo hadn't eaten anything with vitamin content for weeks. He'd even gone to the trouble of picking out green things from Hakkai's nutritionally balanced meals and leaving them on the side of his plate. It was not allowable. Beer, cigarettes and meat formed an unhealthy diet. The argument arising from this at lunchtime had, frankly, spoiled the cosy atmosphere of their home. Gojyo had to learn.

At the door he paused to unbutton his collar. He ran a hand through his hair and shook it out and let his eyes take on a steely glint. That bit wasn't hard. As an afterthought he bit his lips to redden them.

Gojyo looked up when he entered the kitchen with his bag of oranges. He took his feet off the table; a good sign. He sat up straight, even better.

- Roger Ebert write Neat things on fans and being a fan.
- Speaking of Ebert, in his review of Mr. And Mrs. Smith:
As the movie opens, they're in marriage counseling; the spark has gone out of their relationship. On a typical day, they set off separately to their jobs: He to kill three or four guys, she to pose as a dominatrix while snapping a guy's neck. Can you imagine Rock Hudson and Doris Day in this story? Gable and Lombard and Hepburn and Tracy have also been invoked, but given the violence in their lives, the casting I recommend is The Rock and Vin Diesel. In the opening scene, they could fight over who has to play Mrs. Smith.

Sorry. Lost my train of thought.

So after submission of vids and insane Tuesday 9:30am to 9:30pm classes (granted with a 2.5 hr break) and essay due on Wed, rewarded self for finishing auction vid by (guess what?) starting a new vid.

Mind o' mine, why is you so one-track'ed?

Meanwhile, [livejournal.com profile] adrienne2? Bless you for introducing butter with dill to me, fried up some onions today, and CANNOT STOP EATING THEM OMG. Granted, I'm still at a bit of a loss over how best to use it in other dishes but OMG.

I gotta dig up my recipes catagory once memories are available again; I remember saving lots but never getting a chance to try them...especially hot buttered rum. mmmm.

See, it's all part of my plan to teach myself how to cook outside of my box (Vegan Chocolate Cake!); much aided by the fact that my favorite produce place sells these huge 99cent bags of produce. (me = student = cheap. is why I'm nearly vegetarian at home.) Not only are they hella cheap veggies, but no fear whatsoever of making a mistake and wasting food.

Speaking of which, despite how problematic Disney movies are sometimes, I'm really glad they went ahead and messed with the old fairytales. 'Cause yes, they are sappy happy, unrealistic, and often problematic endings, but you know what?

The girl lives. Not only that, but she won.

I mean, you have Bluebeard where the woman gets killed (or nearly killed, depending on your version of the story) 'cause of her curiousity. The Little Mermaid not only loses her voice, but is killed for being so ambitious as to follow her dream. Sleeping Beauty gets pricked by the spindle for a combination of curiousity and her parent's sins, and wakes up to the suckling of the child that she was knocked up with 'cause she was raped in her sleep.

I mean, not that it isn't good to have the darker and more morbid versions at hand; but just...I'm really glad that I heard the Disney versions first. 'Cause even if it does usually end with the dubious priviledge of being married to a vague Prince Charming, at least she won, yanno?

Meanwhile, need very very desperately to start cleaning out my link folders:

She got the feeling he was trying to cheer her up, and that made her laugh, helplessly, even past the knot that had grown fixed in her throat.

"Then I'm afraid you're in the wrong place, though I'm very glad to meet you, ah...?"

"Gojyo," he said. "Sha Gojyo."

"I'm Kanan. Were you...did you come after someone you knew?" she asked hesitantly, thinking that even someone who looked like trouble might have someone he cared for, a lover worth rescuing.

"You mean why am I here?" Gojyo asked, one corner of his mouth tipping up in a sardonic half-smile. "Same reason you are, I guess. His Horniness decided to broaden his horizons, and I'm the handsome bastard they picked to help him out."

Why are you not reading this already??

Okay, since I have very little internet access, I'll go ahead and rec this and explain it more later.

Note: these vids are very much non-traditional, and they're very much a non-traditional narrative. They *work*, but not in traditional ways.

Points of Interest for Star Wars vid:
- Han/Luke ::rolls in 'shippery ball o' happiness::
- meta/thematic style with slide transitions that WORK
- great use of light and motion, interesting mood and POV changes
- song choice that vidder has made me like despite myself
- counterpoint and musical irony (cuts *against* and counterpoint to the beat)

"Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me" is available here, halfway down the page. (It's Angel's first vid and breaks various 'rules' of vidding in facinating ways.)

Points of Interest for Multifandom vid:
- sci-fi apocalyptic creepy-cool DOOM ::inner geek is deeeelighted::
- meta/thematic style, with literary in-jokes
- great use of shape, non-conventional images, motion, and space
- song choice that vidder has made me like despite myself
- is the only multi-fandom vid that has made me feel anything except GF & TS Data's Dream

"In the Year 2525" is available here, at the beginning of the page. (It's Mudd's first vid and gave me neat shivers.)

"You irksome, adolescent, egomaniacal bastard. You have irritated and enraged me for the better part of thirty years, and I won't stand for another minute of it. In the interest of persuading you once and for all to shut up and leave me the hell alone, I will tell you, just this once: I love you, you little prick. I love the way you pull on your pants in the morning, I love the way you drink your tea, I love the way your hair falls in your face when you read, I love the lines around your eyes when you laugh. I've loved you so long I hardly know when I began, and I love you so well I shall never be able to stop. Your feeble little mind can hardly wrap itself around the degree to which I love you, and you needn't preen yourself overmuch for your bravery today, because if you hadn't said it, I surely would not have been able to contain myself much longer. I love you, and only you, and shall never love another my life long, and when you are tired of me and toss me out on my ear, underneath my hatred will still be love, and more love, and yet more. And if, by some undeserved mercy of God, I am fortunate enough to die before you, my last words to you will be: I love you, Sirius Black."
~ From a story by [livejournal.com profile] fabularasa (yes, I realize I gave you the link to her website, not the fic itself. Read through all the stories till you get to it. You can thank me later. ::grins::)

Why, I ask, am I so amused and touched (not necessarily in that order) by pairings in which one parter is a profound irritant to the other? Clark/Lex is never so delightful to me as when they are in their Superman/Luthor mode, when Ryouga is constantly flailing at Ranma, Zelgadis enraged to no end by Xelloss, Sanzo pissed beyond belief at Goku, when Gojyo wants to throttle Hakkai, and when Snape is at his snarliest with either Black or Hagrid.

I mean seriously. Is it just a sadistic urge? Is it an entertaining plot device that's neat to watch? Do I like it so much, because it feels so realistic, and wtf does that say of my views on life? ::gigglesnort::

Ah well, so works the random fannish mind. Off to sleep. fannish party tomorrow, yay!

So forever and a day I've been searching for like the perfect reincarnation fic with a Saiyuki/Wild Adaptor crossover thing going.

AND IT EXISTS. EXISTS IT DOES!

Calling Sister Midnight by [livejournal.com profile] ninhursag

"Hey, you, hasn't your mother taught you it's rude to stare at strangers?" Goku says even though it seems pointless. He can picture an imaginary Sanzo perched on his shoulder telling him not to waste his time on this kind of idiocy and keep walking. But Goku doesn't like to think about Sanzo at all and he's kind of pissed that this kid had the nerve to remind him.

"No. She never told me anything like that." The kid gives a half shrug and keeps staring. Goku might have really kept walking except for that shrug. Affable and a little helpless and almost pure Hakkai. And then there are those eyes. Brown and mildly curious... but. Not. It takes Goku a moment to realize that this boy is just staring ahead blankly and there's nothing alive in those eyes but a shiny brown reflection of Goku's face. The curiosity is all Goku's own reflected back at him. It bugs the shit out of him but he can't figure out why. It's not like the boy is a demon or anything, he smells like plain, dirty, human boy left out in the rain and mud a little too long.

A Nation of Wimps

By: Hara Estroff Marano
Summary: Parents are going to ludicrous lengths to take the bumps out of life for their children. However, parental hyperconcern has the net effect of making kids more fragile; that may be why they're breaking down in record numbers.

...Causes me to both bless and curse my parents on the same breath. They're not as bad as some of those mentioned, but, god. (ask [livejournal.com profile] lierdumoa sometime for the story sometime when my mother called her to hunt me down. she found her number via my phone bill. ::headdesk::)

On the one hand, I wonder how I survived. On the other, I take an honest look at myself, and wonder if I truly did.

Also:
"In an era of rampant grade inflation, some college students find it shocking to discover there are 26 letters in the alphabet"

le sigh.

Mr. And Mrs. Smith Ficathon!!!

Multi-fandom crossover spastiastic joy.

And dude. John Smith got married before in Las Vegas. Ocean's 11 anyone?

God, you could do so much with this...Agent Sands, MiB, Sin City, James Bond, Numb3rs (OH COME ON YOU WANT TO.), XFiles (Krycek anyone?)...a little demonic group of lawyers in LA, some random street racers by the name of Vin, a certain pervert thief of NATO's, irish twins...

I bet someone can even work it into Grey's Anatomy. ::gigglefit::

GO, I BEG OF YOU. ::puppyeyes::

Oh god, I LOVED that!

potentially spoilery thoughts )

In any case, I thought the movie a perfectly delightful romp, that was in turns beautiful visually and hot and funny and cute and explody. It was subtle in a way that most of the audience *gets* it; in which the great plodding difficulty about subtlety is that by definition some people aren't going to get it, so that a movie that manages to be simultaneously non-explict and yet perfectly obvious and YET non-campy is something very rarely seen and very much appreciated by me. The only way it might have been better was if, say, Angelina Jolie was replaced by Johnny Depp.

But one can't have everything.

Poop.
