So, ya'll realize that Dead Man's Chest was reaaaaaally thorough in their research?

And like, [livejournal.com profile] th_nightengale meta'ed really much a lot about that dice game, Perudo, they were playing, it's historical accuracy, and how it relates to characterization of Will, [spoiler character], and [spoiler character].

Her post is here: so about them dice...

And we're pretty sure as to the dice-faces and to the bets that actually occured in the game, seeing as we've watched the game five times already (::covers eyes:: I know, shaddup), and took paper notes.

In other news, PotC:DMC looks REALLY FUCKING AWESOME on digital projector.

That is all.

::attempts to go wade through comments from potc:dmc race and meta post::

I just don't GET why people were saying it sucked because it has so much mythology and research in it, let alone myths and old sea legends and lore! *wallows happily in researchy geek glee*

Yeah a few of my friendslist were saying that they preferred the first film, or they didn't like this one very much but I think maybe those people will see that THIS particular film will make sense in the context of a trilogy when the third film comes out.

I know, I'm eagerly anticipating my next viewing of the film and I'm going to see a subtitled one so I don't miss out on any important dialogue!
Thursday, July 13th, 2006 05:12 pm (UTC)
I was very pleased to find this website www.yourlocalcinema.com which tells me all about subtitled viewings of films in Britain! So far, to date, I've seen Walk The Line, Brokeback Mountain and Jarhead at the cinema screen with subtitles! YAY!
I missed a LOT of info with Pirates:DMC so I am eagerly awaiting the second veiwing!

I thought I saw that! I thought maybe I was just putting bunnies in where there were none!
Plus there is that 'I know the story' thing that came across as either very self important if that teeny locket shaped piece of plot is missed or as a nice little hint of what real importance she has rather than Exposition Queen.
I think it was nicely hidden behind Jacks kleptoness, if people are busy mentally telling him off or la la laing it away, they will miss it completely.

Also, wallowing is just the perfect term for such wonderful researchy meta.
*sings* ... down in the hollow.

You always bring us the best meta. =D

I'm wondering if there's any significance to the fact that the ring Jack stole was right next to the locket. It may have just been an excuse to zoom in on the jewelry, but it would be cool if there was something special about the ring.

*happy sigh*

I do love this fandom :-)

That was a really awesome article. You always link to cool stuff like that. ^^

I just find it amusing that I read this today after I came home from shopping at the mall and saw a special DMC version of Perudo at Borders Express. ♥

Well, I know that I didn't get it (completely) when I saw the movie, but I think I got the most important things from it at the time. I think it comes from me being a card shark and having seen similar situations in bluffing/betting there.

But I understand it much better now! I really need to go see it a second time in the theaters. *admits to have only seen it once*

Yeah, I thought it was pretty cool too. They also had Pirates!Monopoly, but just about everything has a version of Monopoly and Perudo doesn't. I'm still considering going back and buying it. Of course, I could also buy the dice for a whole lot less and find my own cups, but then it wouldn't look as cool. Really, the dice scene was one of my favorites, but maybe that's just the gamer in me talking.

Also on a belated note - yay for research! I admit not knowing much about the stuff that was researched, but it always makes me happy to hear when people want to pay attention to detail like that. I already love this movie, but that just gives me another reason to do so. ^^

If I had more reliable transportation, I probably would have seen it more times by now. That and my schedule does not mesh well with my friends', and this is SUCH a movie to see with a friend.

Pirates!Monopoly looks awesome. Among other things, there's Ships instead of Railroads and Tia's place is Boardwalk.

I can't decide whether I like the first or second better - I think the "new shiny" aspect of DMC is influencing my thoughts, so I'll wait to calm down before passing judgment. In the meantime, I will just say that I love them both. And I couldn't wait for the third even before I saw the second, but now with Teh Evil Cliffhanger it's more like a need than a want.

I wish there was a better picture of it, but that'll give you an idea of what it looks like.

I can't remember where I read it (it might have been in your journal - I wouldn't be surprised if I did) but someone mentioned that PotC watches a lot like the original Star Wars trilogy. A New Hope one ended in such a way that could have been fine to stop the story. The battle was fought and won and there was much rejoicing. There was still room for more story, but it didn't end feeling like you were jipped. Curse of the Black Pearl was like that too. I think one reason I didn't feel the urge to read any fanfic for a long time was because of that. It made one think but not in the way that screamed "plothole!" like many other movies or books do. It's for that reason that I honestly wondered how they were going to make it work. But since this IS Pirates, I'm not surprised that they did.

Continuing with the analogy, Dead Man's Chest and Empire Strikes Back both took a dark turn. We see now that the story is not as simple as we thought (though to say that either movie was simple in general would be an insult, I think), and that if you leave things as they are they'll just go to shit. And Jack isn't the sort that would sit around and wait for his fate to come to him, as was seen in the movie. He's going to fight with everything he has in only the way that Jack can.

And this isn't really as in depth as I could get, but I could possibly make more similarities once I see the movie again. In the meantime, I will just sit back and be amused at the concept of compairing Jedi to Pirates. ♥

Thanks for the compliment! It was kinda a given that the post'd happen after Perma and I burbled at each other for several hours after the movie. And I'm kinda prone to "sticking up" for really random stuff that nobody else is gonna pay attention to, so here I am playing champion for the underdog...dice game.

XD Gotta love fandom. And resist the urge to buy DMC Perudo, as I own several perfectly valid sets of dice already...
Friday, July 14th, 2006 06:30 am (UTC)
*facepalm* And I just realized that I forgot to comment on the entry itself. I'm glad you read Perma's entry about your entry so you saw the compliment. XD;

I'm just so happy that there are other people who enjoyed the dice game scene as much as I did. Heck, at the time I didn't even *know* the game, but I loved it because like I've said above - the gamer in me could compare it to card games and such. I love how drama plays out in scenes like this, and that post helps me understand it that much better. I really think it was one of my favorite scenes in the movie.

And fandom can be so awesome. ^^ I don't think I can resist PotC fan stuffs like I was able to before... (but hey, you'll hear no complaints from me)
Friday, July 14th, 2006 06:37 am (UTC)
*nodnod* That's a lot like what I said in the post: It makes a good "movie game" because it hits a lot of basic notes with a lot of different people without the help of the Exposition Fairy. If nothing less, everyone can understand the importance of guessing "rightly" versus "wrongly" (quantity) in a game, and from that sense tension, if not strategy.

In terms of favorite scenes, I can't really tell you what mine is, as I haven't seen the first half of the movie so many times as I have the Perudo game, and so I'm a bit biased...However, I *will* admit that by viewing three, Perma was calling the game "my scene". Which made me do a very Hakkai "Ah heh. Right." XD

Any rate...if you come up with any other thoughts or any gamer friends who'd appreciate it, please do come right back to the post and set yourselves a-knocking. ^^ More I think on this, the higher the chances I'll actually end up writing out a Perudo game onboard the Pearl. Or something equally gratuitious and shiny. ^_^

Perudo reminds me a lot of BS with dice.

And BS is totally my favorite card game.

Oohh, I can't wait to read this link, thanks so much for it. And I'm still on my POTC happy high and its been a week:)

*sighs in contentment* I love this fandom. I love how detailed it is. I love Dead Man's Chest. I MUST HAVE A BOOTLEG SO THAT I CAN MAKE MY VID.

I'm so glad someone posted about that dice game -- I couldn't for the life of me figure out quite how it worked so I will read that link once I get out of class tonight. *bookmarks*

I heart your icon. And this fandom, which I am finding myself drawn into by DMC. I really don't think I'll be able to stay on the sidelines like I did with CBP especially considering how many bunnies I got from that damn COMPASS omg. ♥
Friday, July 14th, 2006 06:39 am (UTC)
I think this movie is drawing a lot of people in that were only teetering in CotBP. It was just so damn loaded with possibility -- as my friend called it, "an orgy of potential." I, for one, welcome more fic. OMG I NEED RECS.

Thank you! You are welcome to it if you would like; I glutted myself a bit on PotC icons it seems. *g*

OMG YES.

I have this perfect song for an Elizabeth-centric character study focusing on Jack. I don't want to call it Jack/Elizabeth cuz that's EXPLODING all over the place in the actual-romantic-feelings sense and the video is more about how she's drawn to him as a concept than as a physical entity that happens to be "guh" like Johnny, but...oh it is so perfect [livejournal.com profile] permetaform and I am DYING not being able to vid it RIGHT THIS SECOND because I know that by the time the DVD comes out I'll be ded from thesis and grad school applications and *DIES.*

I WANT TO VID. I haven't felt that way in so very long.

Randomly, there's new edits at the bottom of my post; second one links to more dice-color theory from the comment threads which, incidentally, kill me dead and deader, and will never get answered. :P
